世界中で患者数が拡大している不妊症。一般に、２年以上避妊なしで性交しても妊娠しない場合、不妊症と診断される。
　どの国でも不妊症を抱えるカップルが１０～１５％の割合で存在するといわれるが、日本の場合は“晩婚化”と“晩産化”が不妊を深刻化させている。
　さらに人口の多い団塊ジュニア世代が４０代に差しかかったここ数年は、不妊クリニックの患者が急増。現在、日本において不妊治療を行う施設は約６００にのぼり、米国の５００弱を上回る世界一だ。体外受精などの高度生殖医療（ＡＲＴ）の治療件数でも、日本は年間２１.３万件と世界トップ。０９年には、ＡＲＴにより２.６万人強の赤ちゃんが生まれており、今や「新生児の４０人に１人は体外受精児」という時代なのだ。
　本書では、専門家の意見を交えながら、不妊症の基本から、男性不妊・女性不妊の原因、不妊検査の流れ、治療戦略、不妊治療の体験談までをコンパクトにまとめた。
