Summary

Fifty years ago, Zeus, Inc., and its CEO, the mysterious Joseph Brentwood, saved the world from a major energy crisis by discovering a new unlimited energy resource. Now, in 2069, Mr. Brentwood has gone missing, and private eye Alex Grosjean has been hired to find him by his daughter (and Alex's best friend), Aleisha.

Blackouts begin to occur all over the world, and somehow, Alex believes it's tied to Mr. Brentwood's disappearance. Her search leads her through her own murky past and into the fantastical depths of Hell itself, where she discovers that Mr. Brentwood is not who or what he seems to be.

With the help of an otherworldly man named Pip, Alex must save both Mr. Brentwood and the world. But will she be able to face her own guilty past in order to do it?

Interesting story

I enjoyed this story and most of the characters. The plot trundled along at a good pace and the characters were believable. At first, I wasn't sure if I liked the main protagonist, but she grew on me over time.

I thought the narration and production were very good.
Recommended listen.

Greek mythology used in an interesting way

This starts out with some fairly common elements, the main character is a somewhat snarky PI that used to be a cop before an incident caused them to leave, she has a troublesome family life with few friends and fairly precarious finances. However, the author does a good job of building on these familiar elements with the scifi setting in combination with the extensive use of Greek mythology to produce a compelling overall story.

The use of various Greek Gods and the way they were integrated into the story as characters and not simply as gods was well done and helped to round out an interesting cast of character supporting the titular Alex Grosjean.

The narrator gave a good performance, nicely enhancing the story and providing suitably distinctive voices for the main characters.

Overall, this was an enjoyable listen and I will look forward to the subsequent books in this series.

Where the h**l did I leave my car?

This is a mixed genre novel made enjoyable by an excellent narration.

Narrator, Sara Sheckells takes on the persona of Alex Grosjean, a middle aged, female, divorced, ex-cop Private Eye, who lives with her mother and cat when not out following cheating spouses. She also gets occasional easy work from the Power giant, Zeus Inc. Alex has known the Deputy President of the company for years and they are good friends. Which is why, when Alicia asks for her help to find her missing father, the Company head, Alex doesn't feel able to refuse despite feeling totally out of her depth.

Set 50 years in the future, this straightforward detective story suddenly morphs into something else, with mysterious and sinister characters, a personal attraction and romance, bizarre killings and a step into Greek mythology. Yet it does so fairly seamlessly thanks to the naturalistic reading by Ms.Sheckells, who interprets the text impeccably with all of it's cadences and attitudes, as well as giving a spirited reading when such is required, is clear with a pleasing timbre and she also voices each of the other protagonists distinctly and individually. Without her input, I doubt that this novel would have succeeded as well as it does. For all of the outlandish happenings, this performance keeps the book grounded and (inexplicably) real.

This is a fun book which should appeal to cozy detective fans and fantasy readers alike. My thanks to the rights holder who freely gifted me a complimentary copy at my request. The story is complete in itself although opening the way to further books about the main, first person, protagonist, Alex Grosjean, P.I. - now something so much more. I look forward to hearing other performances by this excellent narrator.

A brilliant idea for a story that's well executed

The description of the story had me interested. I thought the story would go into mythology based on the title but then for the first 45 minutes I wasn't sure if I was right. We are slowly eased into the situation and the main character and then we jump into a world where gods walk among us without our knowledge. I really like that.

There's lots going on but in a good way and its never difficult to follow instead it keeps you engaged. Once we are introduced to the concept that Gods exist in our world it really picks up the pace.

I found myself smiling at different situations and I really enjoyed the escapism of the novel. In fact I liked it enough to immediately look if the other books are available when I finished this one.

The narration is key for me. If I don't like the way the narrator talks and does the different characters I can't finish the book. Sara is great. I enjoyed the sound of her voice as she relays the story and also in the way that she brings each of the characters to life.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review
