Summary
Major Etienne Bonnaire, a principled, retired, veteran officer of Napoleon's Grand Army, is forced to go back to war due to financial difficulties. But in doing so, he demotes his career rival, Captain Fabrice Delacroix, who will stop at nothing to get command of the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry back. Etienne’s pregnant wife, Maria, and Delacroix share a dark secret, with which he intends to undo Bonnaire's plans and steal Maria away from him.
Napoleon invades Russia, and in the heat of the summer of 1812, Delacroix informs her the major is dead. But Maria's hope and determination is undeterred, and to find the truth, she undertakes the journey to find her husband, dead or otherwise. Etienne meets a mysterious Russian woman, Katya, and in the disaster of the retreat from Moscow, she will ultimately decide all their fates and the fate of their descendants down the centuries.

Poignant as it is brutal.
Warning! This story will leave you shattered and broken, no matter how resilient you think you are to heartache.
This particular area of history was unfamiliar to me and I found I was fascinated and horrified in equal measure. If you’re looking for a merciless love-has-no-bounds story set against a meticulously researched historical backdrop then without a doubt, this book delivers. Every character is hyper realistic and flawed in the way only we humans can be. By the end, you may find yourself as I did, overwhelmed with indignation, or perhaps you’ll be at peace with the outcome.
The author’s voice makes for an easy listen, his captivating tone and gentle accent will guide you through even the most agonising and appalling parts of the story.
A wise sage once told me ‘never give up, no matter what happens there is always hope’ and this sentiment has never rung more true than here.
Do not hesitate to give this tale a listen, you won’t regret it.
