Summary

A Honeymoon...Abel Yeager Style.

Abel Yeager has settled into a life of domestic bliss with his lovely wife, Charlotte. He’s left the violence and bloodshed behind to concentrate on being a good father and husband. For their long-delayed honeymoon, Abel and Charlie take a Hawaiian cruise. They’re looking forward to hiking volcanoes and sightseeing, once they meet up with Victor "Por Que" Ruiz and his new love, Dr. Alexandra Lopez.

Their idyllic vacation explodes in violence when a group of Hawaiian separatists, incited by a foreign power, rip through the islands, leaving blood and destruction in their wake. When Charlie is caught up with a group of hostages held by the terrorists as human shields, Abel is forced back into warrior mode.

The Hawaiians are supported by a few dozen foreign special forces soldiers, modern gear, and plenty of munitions. Abel has the help of three septuagenarian Vietnam veteran Marines and his pal Victor. Outnumbered and outgunned, Abel will stop at nothing to rescue his wife.

Unforseen sights

This book is about a group of retired Marines who are on holiday in Hawaii when a group of terrorist attempt to take over the islands. The group must attempt to rescue the members of the tour group who have been taken and then stop the terrorist before they can complete their objective.

The story is very intense and the excitement keeps you interested in the book. The narrator lends life to the story.

Silent, disciplined, deadly.

The honeymoon was already beginning to feel slightly less than idyllic as Yeager and his adored wife, Charlotte, together with a small group of others from their cruise ship, began to feel the exhaustion from an elected hike through the wooded Conservation Park. It was an unexpectedly hot summer, bugs were biting and the going hard, especially since a number of the party were elderly and unfit. One seventy something, in particular, was looking unwell and felt unable to go on with the group after a brief rest break. Unable to leave him alone to follow later, the tour guide agreed that Yeager could stay with him and the man's two ex-marine Vietnam veteran friends elected to wait with him, too. Which was why, when the shooting started, they were separated from the main group and not seen by the terrorists ...

This is a thrilling story of an attempted insurrection by Hawaiian seperatists, aided and assisted by soldiers from an outside power, intent on protesting against the annexation of Hawaii by America, and using terrorism to do this. Seen from various perspectives, the characterisation is excellent, the people feel very real and the whole event frighteningly plausible. Adding to the power of this story is the narration by J.Scott Bennett whose pleasant on the ear, gentle drawl has warmth on the surface but with undertones of danger. His voicing of all of the protagonists is also good. A fine performance which adds greatly to the experiencing of the book.

Scott Bell's Yeagers's Getaway is apparently the third in a series but not having read the earlier stories didn't matter: this was a first for me but will not be my last. Action packed, the book still took time for the protagonists to rest, and talk, and plan as well as giving them a reality in the world in which they found themselves at the time. Nicely written, too, with touches of wry humour along the way.
My thanks to the rights holder of this book, who, at my request, freely gifted me a complimentary copy. I know that this story will stay with me, unlike many other thrillers, well into the future because of the sense it gave me of being there, in the story, with the characters themselves.
Recommended.
