About this listen

When CEO Renner Bastion walks into a room, everyone keeps their distance - well, everyone but the sarcastic tattooed Boston-bred security guard whose presence has kept Renner in New Jersey longer than intended. As if the unwanted attraction isn’t unsettling enough, Renner finds out his protector isn’t as unavailable as he originally thought.

Milo Bautista just came out to his wealthy ultra-confident boss, a man he secretly respects and admires...in more ways than he’ll admit. Worldly, experienced Renner would never look in his direction, let alone share some of that confidence he wears like a cloak, so Milo has set his sights on someone else to be his first. But then Renner offers him private lessons in seduction....

I quite liked the other m/m romance I've listened to by Tessa Bailey (Heat Stroke), so I thought I'd give Wound Tight a try, especially as it's narrated by Teddy Hamilton.

But. I was pretty bored. We've got Renner, a grumpy workaholic CEO in his thirties (who has already had a heart attack but is still working himself into an early grave) and Milo, a sunshiny security guard in his mid/late twenties, who acts more like a personal bodyguard than a guard at the factory Renner owns. Milo has been looking out for Renner for a while now, and is also hoping the man will give him some advice; he (Milo) has a bit of a crush on a guy in Boston (a celebrity chef) and wants some pointers as to how to pick up a guy - because he's never done it before and has only just realised he could be into guys as well as women. Renner has been low-key attracted to Milo for a while (but thought he was straight) and agrees because...? I'm not sure. Oh, and Milo is going to try to help Renner to chill out and de-stress and better manage his heart condition.

Um, okay. If he's not taking his doctor's advice (we're not told that, but he plainly isn't) of course he's going to listen to the random (although hot) security guy.

This is a fairly short story - in audio it's five-and-a-half hours - so novella length really, and the romance feels rushed. The characterisation is poor - I had absolutely no sense of who either of these guys are as people or why everyone hates Renner and I just didn't really care about either of them. The banter is good, the sex is hot, but the romance is just meh; the dirty talk (which I know the author is famous for) is cringe-y and over the top, the third-act conflict feels like it's thrown in for effect, and please, please can we just do away with public declarations of love; that final scene in which Renner announces his luurve for Milo over the tannoy in the factory and then starts playing cheesy music made me want to laugh rather than go "awww".

Teddy H. does a good job with the narration (although his Australian accent is pants, but it's only in one scene), and is always a pleasure to listen to; had I read this with my eyes rather than my ears, I probably would have DNF'd.

Dull & poorly characterised with no plot
