About this listen

Have you ever wondered what happens when you die? If there is a God? And did he ever have a plan for the world?

When committed rationalist and atheist, Ralph, dies on his honeymoon he discovers, much to his unhappy surprise, the answers to all of these questions.

He finds himself on a cloud and working for a God who is very unhappy that his plan for the world has all gone horribly wrong. And if Ralph is ever going to make it through the pearly gates to enjoy an afterlife with his late (but still much loved) bride, he has to go back and fix the world.

A very tongue-in-cheek satirical take on religion, belief and petty office politics, this sitcom is bursting with imaginative, fresh writing.

With added dodos....

It reminds me of Old Harry's game, but unfortunately it's nowhere near as good. Interesting concept but not excited.

Interesting concept.

What disappointed you about Working for the Big Man?

From the off I was put in mind of Old Harry's Game by Andy Hamilton. Unfortunately this particular script doesn't come off too well in the comparison. There was the odd line that raised a smile, but on the whole it felt like it was torn between trying to emulate Hamilton's work and trying to be it's own thing, and being a little too timid to succeed at either.

Would you ever listen to anything by Rob Sears and Tom Sears again?

I wouldn't specifically *avoid* them if their work appeared/was credited on the radio, but I might not *buy* their work until I'd heard something I liked more.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favourite?

Mitch Benn is a reliable presence delivering his standard 'God voice'.

Any additional comments?

Not the weakest of the 5 pilots, but I think that's largely down to Benn's performance.

Feels like it's been done before, & done better

The irreverent tone, theme and characters reminded me of Old
Harry's Game, set in Hell and featuring puny humans coping with Satan's stormy moods and ingenious plans to conquer humanity. I was entertained for 28 minutes, performances and production was faultless with effective sound effects but wonder if a series could be built on a single joke..

Best of the five pilots

..... however hasn't this been done recently by Ardal O'Hanlon in 'Best Laid Plans' for BBC Radio 4, or at least in a very similar vein?

I get the set up for the series.......

I'n sure I've heard similar before and it felt very comfortable but it made me smile and want to listen to more.
