Not an ADHD friendly read at all
- By Zsofi on 20-11-21
Summary
Every year, millions of withdrawn little girls and chronically overwhelmed women go undiagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder because they don't fit the stereotypical profile: they're not fast-talking, hyperactive, or inattentive, and they are not male.
Sari Solden's groundbreaking study reveals that ADHD affects just as many women as men, and that the resulting depression, disorganization, anxiety, and underachievement are also symptoms of ADHD.
Newly revised and updated to reflect the latest clinical research, the book explores treatment and counseling options, and uses real-life case histories to examine the special challenges women with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) face, such as the shame of not fulfilling societal expectations.
Included is a brand-new chapter on friendship for women with ADHD. Three empowering steps - restructuring one's life, renegotiating relationships, and redefining self-image - help women take control of their lives and enjoy success on their own terms.

Audiobook is the perfect way to absorb this, and I listened whilst cleaning (which at times made me stop and sit down as Sari described exactly what I was doing in that moment!). I’m a 37 year old woman who has struggled deeply with symptoms of ADHD my whole life and never understood what it meant. I’m thrilled and inspired to understand myself better now. Thank you so much, Sari.

Very in depth & helpful information
The book details a couple of example fictional characters, to outline & illustrate how so many women make it to adulthood, without a formal diagnosis & highlights the difficulties faced in life, without this level of self awareness.
Sari gives valuable insights about the ADHD brain & the effects that reek havoc in the lives of the women & their families who are affected.
There's tools, tips & strategies, as well as script ideas, to find language for communicating highly emotive subjects.
It's not intended to be a replacement for an expert diagnosis, in fact she goes to great lengths to point people in the direction of the services to help themselves. Including how best to work with a coach.
It's one I will return to sections of as needed. I found the narration easier on the ear at x1.25

You may have ADHD if you need to listen to this on 1.5 Speed!
I note the past reviews about struggling to listen to this due to the delivery of the reading. I overcame this by listening on 1.2-1.5 speed- the speed your brain goes at in all walks of life when you have ADHD!!
I’m glad I did, because the content was very good (if a bit chauvinistic in its traditional gender role assumptions, but reality is women do often fall into the runners of the household in the vast majority of cases), and it was good to read about the specifics of ADHD presentation in women, which is vastly different to the preconceived notion of ADHD boys....

unbearable
I read many positive reviews of the books by this author so I thought I must read it. The content was quite good, but it took forever to get to the main points.
As a woman with ADHD, I could not listen to this because my attention drifted 20 seconds. The narration was monotonous and unbearable.
If you don't have attentional problems but your significant other(s) suffer from one, this one might be for you.

Informative content, but I recommend skipping the long intros, terrible choice to make for an ADHD audience. I appreciate the effort made by the author to narrate her own work, but I'm sorry to say, she's terrible at it. I wish I had purchased a printed copy instead.

Good info but narration is beyond horrible
The info is good and useful but the narration is one of the worst I have ever heard. I don't think it is read by a professional. the narrator is dull with no inflection, monotonous. Additionally, she reads haltingly and stumbles over words periodically. Its like listening to people trying to read aloud in a classroom. For anyone with ADHD this makes it exceedingly hard to listen to. As interested as I am in the subject matter I do not know if I will be able to finish the book due to the narration. I keep tuning out and my thoughts wonder because of the terrible narration and it is very frustrating because I WANT to hear the info contained in this book. I really hope they re-record this book with a better narrator so it is more accessible in the future.

NOT for ADD or ADHD readers
Dear DR. Solden, I am writing this review as a woman who strongly suspect she has attention deficit disorder. Despite the fact that I found the content of the book useful (until now. I managed to read up to about 10% of it), I suggest you re-think the structure and length of your book, together with re-thinking how to narrate it (or hiring a professional for that purpose). This is a 12 hours audiobook!! twelve ! I didn' t realize that when I purchased it, else I wouldn 't have made the purchase. Apart from the fact that I do not believe it takes 12 hours to explain the nuts and bolts of the issue, you should know that the attention span of a person affected by this disorder is quite short, and that the communication must be efficient and to the point. If you want to talk to ADD readers, that is. Added to that is the fact that the narration is totally slow and flat in tone....really difficult to keep interest of ADD people (or anyone else, for that matters) with this kind of narration. I am quite surprised that when crafting this book and choosing who should narrate it, you did not consider the characteristics (in specific: problems with focus and attention) of the very people you want to help and I believe, to target with this book. In all honesty, I am not sure I will be able to finish this book because of these reasons.

Some Good Info, Monotonous Narrator
The information in this book is useful, if not a little focused on the ide that a woman's will only be about her role as a homemmaker, wife, and mother. The little focus on work is based on the idea that women have expendable jobs for which quitting is a perfectly reasonable solution.
My specific issue with the audio book is that the narration is flat and momentous. I listen to a few audio books a month, mostly on psychological/neurological issues, but I could hardly focus on this one because of this.
