About this listen

‘Chillingly addictive’ – Cosmopolitan

AN INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

‘I did an evil thing to be put in here, and I’m going to have to do an evil thing to get out.’

In this twisted, unforgettable horror, a group of young girls turn to a dark, ancient magic. From Grady Hendrix, New York Times bestselling author of How to Sell a Haunted House and The Final Girl Support Group.

They call them wayward girls. Loose girls. Girls who grew up too fast. And they’re sent to the Wellwood House in St. Augustine, Florida, where unwed mothers are hidden by their families to have their babies in secret, give them up for adoption, and most important of all, to forget any of it ever happened.

And where every moment of their waking day is strictly controlled by adults who claim they know what’s best for them.

Fifteen-year-old Fern arrives at the home in the sweltering summer of 1970, pregnant, terrified and alone. There, she meets a dozen other girls in the same predicament.

There's Rose, a hippie who insists she’s going to keep her baby and escape to a commune. Zinnia, a budding musician who plans to marry her baby’s father. And Holly, barely fourteen, mute and pregnant by no-one-knows-who.

Then Fern meets a librarian who gives her an occult book about witchcraft, and power is in the hands of the girls for the first time in their lives. But power can destroy as easily as it creates, and it’s never given freely.

There’s always a price to be paid . . . and it’s usually paid in blood.

powerful story however, I feel like the witchcraft element of the story was completely lost.

narrator was great

My nan was sent to one of these homes and spent her whole life looking for her son. To listen to this really made me consider aspects of what she went that I never considered. Especially considering Hendrix is a male author the descriptions of the female experience is amazing and so respectful. I loved this book from start to finish. Only complaint is the reader couldn't pronounce my name correctly, Briony.

Good portrale of female struggles at this time

This is my first Grady Hendrix novel and I loved it, though felt totally wrong out by the end.  We follow a group of pregnant teenagers in 1970 who are left by their parents at Miss Wellwoods Home for Wayward Girls until they had their babies, which were all adopted.  The four main characters, Fern, Rose, Zinnia and Holly meet a mysterious librarian who introduced them to witchcraft.

This book is described as a supernatural horror but there isn't a lot of outright horror though the detailed childbirth scenes are pretty disturbing. It is very creepy in places though, and I found the way the girls were treated, stripped of all their rights, pretty horrific.

I loved the four main characters, especially Fern, but have to give a special mention to Hagar, who was totally awesome.

This book will definitely stay with me, and will certainly be one of my favourite books of 2025.
