Summary

From America's greatest storytellers comes the first in an explosive series featuring a new hero of the Old West in an epic fight for justice that begins as so many legends do: in a hailstorm of bullets...

After spending most of his young life driving cattle from Texas to Nevada, Will Tanner is ready to wash the trail dust from his throat. Maybe it was fate that brought him to the Morning Glory Saloon on the border of Indian Territory - or just plain bad luck - because right after his sits down three rough-looking characters walk into the bar with vengeance in their eyes, guns at their sides...and fingers on their triggers. The trio's target is the famous US Deputy Marshal Dove who arrested one of their kin - and who's sitting in the bar near Will Tanner. Seeing that Dove is facing losing odds, Will Tanner makes a decision that changes his life forever. He draws, takes aim, and saves the deputy's life. Tanner has himself a new job, a badge, and enough grit to make him a legend on the American frontier.

Engaging

Over the years I have read a number of William W. Johnstone’s books. He died in 2004. J. A. Johnstone, who was trained by his uncle, carries on the family business of writing westerns. I am unsure if J. A. Johnstone is his niece or nephew as I have seen it reported both ways.

This is a good old fashion western tale. Will has been a cowpuncher for a number of years. He helps save a U. S. Marshall’s life and was recruited into the Marshall service. The book is well written. The plot is straight forward with lots of suspense. The characters are interesting. The book got my attention at the beginning and kept it throughout. If you enjoy a good western, try this book.

The book is eight hours and fourteen minutes. Eric Michael Summerer does an excellent job narrating the book. Summerer is a voice-over actor and audiobook narrator. He has won the prestigious Audie Award and numerous Earphone Awards.

Another great Johnstone bookc

l hope that this is the beginning of another great series because I am eagerly awaiting a sequel. Awesome that they worked Old Grandpa Perley Gates into the book too which is another great series. This book gets on with the action and doesn't drag and is easy to follow.

not too shabby.

I feel like it lulled in parts but for the most part it was a decent story. I may try another book in the series to see where it goes before I really decide how I feel.

Too much profanity!

way too much profanity in this. I could not really enjoy this because of the profanity. I wish writers could realize that they can write best sellers without using profanity.

I don't do a lot of audible reviews, but this ...

... story just demands that I share my opinion about it with everyone else that reads Audible. I thought the narrator was rather pointedly suited to do this particular type of story. I couldn't put it down, though I couldn't quite give him five stars as I felt there needed to be a little wiggle room left for something better. That being said, I just couldn't stop listening to it. This author/These authors are are the Best Western writers to have come about since Larry McMurtry, Louis L'Amour and John S McCord (the author that wrote "The Baynes Clan" series of stories). Excellent storytelling, with enough tragedy to pull at your heart strings, and just enough hint at romance to make you think that something just might happen in the not-too-distant future. With something constantly going on ... with a whistling bullet just beyond the next turn of the page ... you too will find it intensely difficult to determine a good place to stop. Overall, it's been a number of years since I have enjoyed a western as much as I have enjoyed this book. I didn't any more than finish it than I went off and bought the second part and I'm downloading it as I write this review. What you'll find in this book is the profoundly poignant satisfaction that every decent, moral, law abiding man finds in seeing the living shit shot out of the bad guy who so desperately needs to have it done to him. If you like westerns, BUY THIS BOOK. You WON'T regret it!

Hard to finish

Sorry I feel a sleep trying to finish this one several times. I really like William W Johnstone, just not this book. I may try another Will Tanner it will have to be a lot better than this one.
