About this listen

Jacques McKeown is the most celebrated author of star-pilot fiction in the galaxy. He's rich, famous, and living in luxury, and his universe-wide fanbase eagerly awaits any news of his next book.

There's just one small hitch.

He's not Jacques McKeown.

He's Dashford Pierce, star pilot and con artist, and if only the impatient calls from his publisher were the worst of his problems. There's also the last vestige of the Henderson crime gang, trouble brewing in the retired star-pilot community, and a small matter of somebody trying to kill him.

As his web of lies falls apart and the crosshairs zero in, Pierce has no other option but to take one last adventure. An odyssey to the very edge of known space to finally answer the question that has twisted up his life for five years: Just who is Jacques McKeown?

It’s rare to find the conclusion to a trilogy that works both as an incredibly engaging self contained story and as a satisfying end to what has been a truly amazing arc, not just for the main character but to the world and themes that bustle about him. There is so much to praise here even setting aside the great performance by the author, but I will only say that the final chapter had me literally stop dead on my feet. I would have clapped had the grin on my face not already been drawing sanity-questioning glances from passers-by. Sublime from start to end and I can’t wait to revisit all three.

An entertaining end to the trilogy. I'll miss the characters. I hope this gets turned into a low-budget, Britsh sci-fi show one day.

(not) plying track.

very good had me in stitches. its a part 2 book that always makes me feel like I have been robbed of a real ending. Good to see he's planning another, but this is not as good as the first 2. The AI should recreate his maker or Sterb to try and put in storage for a hundred years and he could try and rescue him... Will save my nemesis for free...

Will Leave the Galaxy for Good. A proper finish to the twisting story of Dashford Pierce and the mysterious Jacque MacKeown. This entry confidently strips itself of series conventions to pursue things in a new and much more cerebral direction.

Though rest assured: the series’ trademark wit and humour shines through (though arguably comedy takes something of a backseat for the concluding entry). The book feels very determined to tie up all hanging plot threads and niggling questions readers may have.

Croshaw delivers a great performance, maintaining his classic pointed delivery and sardonic tone. Though there’s no fear at attempting more ‘out-there’ performances for some characters, which is enduringly entertaining (intentional or otherwise).

To conclude: it’s sad to see the series ride off into reaches unknown, but provides an undeniably satisfying (and arguably definitive) ending.

A strong ending to an excellent trilogy
