This is an unhurried tale of a love between a Goddess and a mortal, narrated well.
The first person narrative creates a more personal, intimate atmosphere so there is less exposition and more reflective internal dialogue. For me, the balance was not quite right in parts as I like more vivid, descriptive scenes to anchor me in a story.
Once I got used to the lyrical prose, I gave in to the the gentle, flowing pace, however a few chapters did drift by with so little progression I almost stopped. The introduction of Vincent's voice picked things up!
The most interesting aspects of the story are the politics and relationships between the Gods rather than the love story. Yes, there is some tension and yearning but nothing to swoon over as there is comparatively little interaction between them for most of the book.
The audio is well worth a listen as there is an interesting end note and interview in which the author explains her literary choices for this particular book.

One of the best books I’ve read this year. Loved the characters and their stories. The narration was great, very easy to listen to.

This is the first book from Rebecca Ross that I have read and I liked it. I can't say I loved it, but it was good enough to make me want to read the next two books. I read a lot of reviews about the other two books in this series and after reading this one, I'm curious to see how things will turn out in those two.

This book started great. The first 2 chapters hooked me in an instant, but after that, the pacing was really slow. I think it took me around 100-150 pages to be intrigued again. For me, the first 30% of the book almost lost me, but then we got to see more of Vincent and I was back in the game. The next 40-50% of the book was a little bit better and then it was really good. So, yeah, the pace was a huge problem, and even when everything improved, some passages became a little boring.

Vincent and Bade are gold. I loved how they were written and the impact they had. They are the reason I stayed in this story and the last 20% of the book saved my rating :)) I am not a fan of Matilda at all... but I liked some of her choices and the fact that she chose Vincent, knowing very well how everything will end.

As I adore the authors other works, this was very disappointing. The main couple the story centres around is underdeveloped, they interact maybe 5 times in the entire book for brief periods, and their connection is shallow at best. Matilda has more of a connection and backstory with the antagonist who she was literally in a relationship with for years. The enemies to lovers for secondary characters would have made for an actually interesting story.

I was excited to read but unfortunately this was over hyped. The relationship between the characters was not built in depth, I found myself struggling to finish this book despite listening and reading unfortunately.
