About this listen

THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Blockbuster bestseller Rebecca Ross returns to the world of international sensation Divine Rivals with her most epic story yet.

Before Iris sat at her typewriter and before Enva sang her song, a young goddess wandered dreams…

Born to the firelit domain of the underworld, Matilda is the youngest goddess of her clan, blessed with humble messenger magic. But in a land where gods kill each other for magic, Matilda must come of age sooner than most. She may be known to carry letters through the realms, but she also carries secrets of her own: one of them deadly, the other a mortal boy who dreams of her, despite the fact they have never met…

Ten years ago, Vincent of Beckett wrote to Matilda on the darkest night of his life – begging the goddess he befriended in dreams for aid. But his prayer went unanswered, forever hardening his heart against the gods. That is until the same goddess comes tumbling through his window, bearing a letter to change both their destinies. For Matilda and Vincent are tangled together by threads of fate and the promise of a future beyond dreams, one that might rewrite the dark, blood-soaked ways of the gods…or end them.

Critic reviews

Praise for Rebecca Ross

‘Rich and romantic – if stories had scent, this one would smell like a mug of black tea, the ink ribbons of a typewriter, and that addictive spice called enemies to lovers’

Shelby Mahurin, New York Times bestselling author of Serpent & Dove

‘A sweeping start to a beautiful and romantic new series. Ross weaves her stories in such a vulnerable and delicate way, truly with a style all her own. I adored this book’

Adalyn Grace, Sunday Times bestselling author of Belladonna

‘Ross enchants with a clever and sweeping love story set against an imaginative, dangerous world. Her writing sparkles, brimming with wit and magic from the first page to the last’

Isabel Ibañez, finalist for the William C. Morrow award

‘Ross has crafted a tale that hooks its readers with whip-smart intrigue, and holds them fast with dazzling prose, a charming cast, and a world where mystique shimmers just beneath the surface. Hers is a brilliant blend of whimsy and heart’

Ayana Gray, New York Times bestselling author of Beasts of Prey

One of the best books I’ve read this year. Loved the characters and their stories. The narration was great, very easy to listen to.

Great narration, amazing story

As I adore the authors other works, this was very disappointing. The main couple the story centres around is underdeveloped, they interact maybe 5 times in the entire book for brief periods, and their connection is shallow at best. Matilda has more of a connection and backstory with the antagonist who she was literally in a relationship with for years. The enemies to lovers for secondary characters would have made for an actually interesting story.

Performance was decent

This is the first book from Rebecca Ross that I have read and I liked it. I can't say I loved it, but it was good enough to make me want to read the next two books. I read a lot of reviews about the other two books in this series and after reading this one, I'm curious to see how things will turn out in those two.

This book started great. The first 2 chapters hooked me in an instant, but after that, the pacing was really slow. I think it took me around 100-150 pages to be intrigued again. For me, the first 30% of the book almost lost me, but then we got to see more of Vincent and I was back in the game. The next 40-50% of the book was a little bit better and then it was really good. So, yeah, the pace was a huge problem, and even when everything improved, some passages became a little boring.

Vincent and Bade are gold. I loved how they were written and the impact they had. They are the reason I stayed in this story and the last 20% of the book saved my rating :)) I am not a fan of Matilda at all... but I liked some of her choices and the fact that she chose Vincent, knowing very well how everything will end.

It was ok.
