Unfortunately, abuse happens everywhere and can come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes, it can happen right in front of us, and we still won't see it, or maybe, we just choose to ignore it hoping that one day it will go away on its own. This is my true story about living with a monster - a monster whom only those in my household would have ever had the unfortunate chance to meet. The monster I called my daddy!

I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

Story
Writing this memoir has to be one of the hardest things I have ever achieved. Out of respect for the dead, this story has been told exactly how it happened. I was born in 1985 in Lancashire, England, to two alcoholic parents. Having selfish parents left me exposed to abuse, poverty, and crime. My loving grandparents helped me the best they could at the weekends, but life was barely survivable.

Ryan and Phil had always been inseparable. Twins born 35 minutes apart, Ryan was the protective one, constantly looking out for his younger brother. They can't remember how old they were when the abuse started, but they can remember their uncle very clearly. A frequent visitor to their home in Lincoln, he lavished their family with expensive treats. School holidays and weekends were spent visiting him, when he would often take the two little boys aside to play the games he liked. Trapped with him, day after day, year after year, the abuse continued until Ryan and Phil turned 16.

Shaneda Daly was only 6 years old when her father started grooming her. For more than 10 years, he would go on to sexually abuse and rape his daughter at least once a day. In her house of doom, the emotional and physical toll on Shaneda was immense. Eventually, her ex-army and prison officer father admitted to his family what he had been doing, agreeing to leave home to get help. Returning after only a year, he was welcomed back, apparently a changed man. With no choice but to accept it, Shaneda lived alongside him again only for him to try and abuse her once more.

Summary
In 1976, Francis Beaumont spirited 11-year-old Kim Chown and her brother away from their mother to Africa, where he had taken a job as a university lecturer. There, behind a veneer of respectability, he terrorised and brutalised his own child, Kim, sexually and emotionally abusing her several times a day.
Only aged 20 did Kim feel able to escape from him, descending into alcoholism, after her siblings and mother refused to help her seek justice. But after almost ending her own life, Kim fought back. With the support of her husband and adult children, she finally faced him in court and won justice for his shocking crimes.
This is one woman's inspiring true story of overcoming harrowing abuse to build a happy life - against all odds.

Very powerful book
First of all may I thank you Kim for writing this all down they do say writing down bad events in your life can help with the healing process. Secondly I praise you for your courage for a child going through such agony from your father was the worst betrayal I can not imagine.
Hearing the appalling things this monster did was just pure evil and I would hope he dies in prison alone, he really doesn't deserve your sympathy Kim and as for your brother and sisters I can't imagine how they thought it right to stick by him.
Georgian Sutton was very good at narrating as well.

Harrowing
What Kim went through was harrowing and the book was difficult to listen to in parts. There were parts that were so disturbing I wanted to skip over them but didn’t. Kim’s strength and courage throughout her ordeal is amazing. She showed such courage to bring her Father to justice even without her siblings support.
