Story
They live 500 miles apart. Yet their lives are about to collide. Lissa loves her job as a nurse, but recently she's been doing a better job of looking after other people than looking after herself. After a traumatic incident at work leaves her feeling overwhelmed, she agrees to swap lives with someone in a quiet village in Scotland. Cormac is restless. Just out of the army, he's desperately in need of distraction and there's precious little of it in Kirrinfief. Maybe three months in London is just what he needs.

Maggie went to the window and opened it wide, inhaling the lovely, ozoney air off the sea. Why had she never lived by the sea before? Why had she always looked out on housing estates and not the little white hulls of trawlers bobbing off in the distance? It's gloriously sunny in Cornwall as the school year starts at the little boarding school by the sea.

Summary
Where have all the men gone? Faced with 25,000 more women than men in London and gleeful media reports that it's statistically more likely for single women to be murdered than get married, Katie has reached an all-time low. But all is not lost....
Another hilarious high-concept romantic comedy from Jenny Colgan.
While Katie's glad it's not a man's world anymore, she'd be quite pleased if there were more men in it - or at least single ones, anyway.
More likely to get murdered than married, according to gleeful media reports, Katie resigns herself to the fact there's no sex in the city and heads for the hills - or the Scottish Highlands, to be precise.
Despite the fact she's never been a girl for wellies and Fairlish is in the middle of nowhere, the tiny town does have one major draw: men. Lots of them. But while Katie relishes the chance to do battle with armies of admirers, she's not reckoned on going head to head with her grumpy new boss, Harry; shadowy developers intent on destroying the beautiful countryside; and Mrs. McClockerty, the least suitable hotelier since Norman Bates.
At least there's the local eye candy to distract her, including gorgeous newshound Iain. But he is at loggerheads with Harry, and Harry despises her. Life in the country might not be one big roll in the hay, but can Katie ever turn her back on the delights of Fairlish and return to city life?

Worth persevering with?
Despite exploring interesting themes all the way through, this was a strange one in that it took me until chapter seventeen to really get into and start enjoying the book and I was quite near the end then as well...
I particularly liked the idea of too many ladies in London for the number of 'boys' and too many gents for the number of ladies in the small Scots town where it ends up, an idea that showed much promise of entertainment, which I didn't feel was fully realised. Almost like Jenny Colgan had this great idea and then wasn't entirely sure what to do with it!
Up until chapter seventeen I found the characters were a bIt annoying at times. During chapter seventeen, when I began to like the main characters and to care what happened to them, I began to feel glad I had persevered as it did get so much better and had a satisfying ending. So although worth persevering for in the end, it was a mixed bag of a book.

Made me laugh!
What made the experience of listening to Where Have All the Boys Gone? the most enjoyable?
I really enjoyed this book as I do all of Jenny Colgan's but I particularly loved Helen McAlpine's excellent reading of it. Sometimes I don't enjoy people doing voices, but hers and her Scottish accents are just brilliant and made me laugh as much as the story itself.

slow starter... but not a bad book
This was a very slow starter, different from many of Jenny's other books (example. cupcake cafe), I thought the narrator was very good and I enjoyed the story. however, there does seem to be a bit too much swearing in it for my liking.

Awful
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Better plot and likeable characters
What was most disappointing about Jenny Colgan’s story?
Horrible girls. Common, chav, sexist, ageist, sizeist. Nothing to like about them.
What didn’t you like about Helen McAlpine’s performance?
OK. But lots of words mis-pronounced. And a mistake of name that was left in. Expressions spoken and not put into play.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Boring and dull. Girls are horrible. Dull story. Just awful.
Any additional comments?
Cannot not recommend this enough. Terrible writing.

Fantastic narration
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Any additional comments?
A very far-fetched and silly plot, but with lots of laugh out loud moments and a satisfying ending. Helen McAlpine's narration was absolutely superb (apart from the famous people who strayed into the story - she's no mimic!)
