Summary

In this abridged audiobook version of his best-selling title, Paul Dix talks you through the book’s hugely influential behavior management approach - an approach whereby expectations and boundaries are exemplified by people, not by a thousand rules that nobody can recall. The testing, watch out for and nuggets sections have been removed for this audiobook, but the indispensable advice on how to involve all staff in developing a whole school ethos built on kindness, empathy, and understanding remains. Suitable for teachers and school leaders - in any setting - who are looking to upgrade their approach to school behavior.

Contents include:

  1. Visible consistency, visible kindness
  2. The counterintuitive classroom
  3. Deliberate botheredness
  4. Certainty in adult behaviour
  5. Keystone classroom routines
  6. Universal microscripts: flipping the script
  7. Punishment addiction, humiliation hangover
  8. Restore, redraw, repair
  9. Some children follow rules, some follow people
  10. Your behaviour policy sucks!
  11. The 30 day magic

I want my time and money back.

Filled with jargon and lengthy diatribes detailing the harm teachers are doing to children mitigated by nuggets of practical advice such as, "Be quietly inspirational every day."

Kindred spirit

I’ve been a teacher for 22 years and I never have any problems with any students. By being kind, calm, patient, caring and understanding I always win over even the most hard to reach students.

This audiobook talks about a lot of techniques that I’ve developed in my own teaching over the years. It was like listening to a kindred spirit. Fantastic. I’m buying the book now because I understand there’s more in the book.

Inspirational!

An extremely well written and narrated manual for school leaders and classroom teachers who want to instill good behaviour in a way that works, leaves children's self esteem intact, and inspires a sense of hope. Peppered with uplifting stories of school and student success stories...invest in increasing the adults' emotional intelligence and skills, simplify rules and consequences, be consistent.

Okay overall

Some good common sense points presented as revolutionary ideas. Be kind, think about what the students are going through and control your own behaviour first and foremost. It is perhaps a sign of just how bad some of our schools have become that this text is now critical reading for student teachers.

Great book for anyone in education.

Excellent book having been in education for 13 years I like to think I am doing things correctly. But of course we are all guilty of forgetting different strategies and techniques that have worked well in the past. Great advice all through the book that I will take away and put in to practise. I particularly like his thoughts on managing bad behaviour .

Good book

Nice ideas, not sure how easy it is to put them into practice though. It is still worth.
