Story
When seventh grader Georges (the S is silent) moves into a Brooklyn apartment building, he meets Safer, a 12-year-old coffee-drinking loner and self-appointed spy. Georges becomes Safer's first spy recruit. His assignment? Tracking the mysterious Mr. X, who lives in the apartment upstairs. But as Safer becomes more demanding, Georges starts to wonder: how far is too far to go for your only friend? Liar & Spy is an inspired, often-funny story about destiny, goofy brilliance, and courage.

After her parents' divorce, Bea's life became different in many ways. But she can always look back at the list she keeps in her green notebook to remember the things that will stay the same. The first and most important: Mom and Dad will always love Bea, and each other. When Dad tells Bea that he and his boyfriend, Jesse, are getting married, Bea is thrilled. Bea loves Jesse, and when he and Dad get married, she'll finally (finally!) have what she's always wanted - a sister. Hi! My name is Janie Ray, and I'm 11 years old. When I first got this diary from my mom, I didn't think I'd have all that much to write about. I mean, let's face it - fifth grade isn't exactly the most exciting thing in the world. But then, really strange things started happening. Like last week, my best friend Sheila and I were hanging out in our clubhouse, drinking lemonade and trying to figure out what to do about Marcia the Snob, when we suddenly noticed a weird inscription on this old medallion I found when I was little.

Summary
By sixth grade, Miranda and her best friend, Sal, know how to navigate their New York City neighborhood. They know where it's safe to go, like the local grocery store, and they know whom to avoid, like the crazy guy on the corner.
But things start to unravel. Sal gets punched by a new kid for what seems like no reason, and he shuts Miranda out of his life. The apartment key that Miranda's mom keeps hidden for emergencies is stolen. And then Miranda finds a mysterious note scrawled on a tiny slip of paper:
I am coming to save your friend's life, and my own.
I must ask two favors. First, you must write me a letter.
The notes keep coming, and Miranda slowly realizes that whoever is leaving them knows all about her, including things that have not even happened yet. Each message brings her closer to believing that only she can prevent a tragic death - until the final note makes her think she's too late.
Critic reviews
"[W]hen all the sidewalk characters from Miranda's Manhattan world converge amid mind-blowing revelations and cunning details, teen readers will circle back to the beginning and say,'Wow... cool.'" (Kirkus Reviews)
"[T]he mental gymnastics required of readers are invigorating; and the characters, children, and adults are honest bits of humanity no matter in what place or time their souls rest." (Booklist)

Bad choice of narrator
This is one of my favourite books, so I bought the audiobook to re listen to it, however I found the choice of narrator to be a bit disappointing. The narration wasn't bad, as much as it really didn't fit the vibe and character of the book.

Simply fantastic!
I've been recommending this book to everyone I can, adult and children alike. I've listened to it twice already and enjoyed it tremendously. My six year old daughter loved it too (though I'm sure she didn't understand all of it). This book is my absolute favorite kind of book. A tautly written, tightly plotted story in which all the pieces only make sense after you've read the story.
It was the best book I listened to (or read) last year!

Stellar
My 11 year old son and I were completely transfixed by the story. Tightly woven, engaging, and a brilliant thought exercise on time travel. Trippy in the best way and filled with lovable, imperfect characters. I was particularly happy with the adult characters who were crafted with uncommon respect and connectedness. We are ordering her new book right now!

I LOVED IT WITH ALL OF MY HEART!!! (Don’t read if you have read the book ;)
My English teacher assigned me this book to read and answer questions. I can’t tell you how much I LOVED it!!! I loved it because it was well read by Cynthia, and most of the books I listen to are with people breathing heavily or really swallowing there spit. So I’m so happy my teacher showed me this, and my favorite part was the ending where Miranda and Colin become a couple :D
