About this listen

In rural Devon, six-year-old Joanna Mason witnesses an appalling crime. Thirty years later, the man convicted of the crime is released from prison. In Edinburgh, 16-year-old Reggie works as a nanny for a G.P. But Dr Hunter has gone missing, and Reggie seems to be the only person who is worried.

Across town, Detective Chief Inspector Louise Monroe is also looking for a missing person, unaware that hurtling towards her is an old friend - Jackson Brodie - himself on a journey that becomes fatally interrupted.

Would you consider the audio edition of When Will There Be Good News? to be better than the print version?

I've not read the print version so can't comment. But I have read other books by her and enjoyed both ways!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Well... Jackson Brodie of course. I love his matter of fact and resigned attitude to life coupled with his determination to be on the right side of justice (not the same as the law of course)

What about Jason Isaacs’s performance did you like?

Just the right level of down and up beat to be right for the tone of all of this book series. Our hero is a bit of a pessimist but he has good reason to be.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I kept myself up very late a couple of evenings as a result of trying to.

Any additional comments?

I really love the way Kate Atkinson gets into her stories. You don't really know where they're going to all come together and suddenly the whole plot makes sense. This book has a particularly satisfying ending!

Loved it

I’ve only recently discovered this author and her charismatic PI Jackson Brodie. Her first 2 books were highly entertaining but this one is one the best I’ve ever read/listened to. It really is worth more than 5 stars.

Brilliant book

Great if unlikely tale, beautifully told. Keeps you engaged but best regarded as fairy tale.

It was lovely to return to this series. I read the books when they first came out, listened to the audiobooks a couple of times each over the years, but the unabridged audio really bothered me. The narrator wasn’t good and the mispronounced words and names (especially Niamh) absolutely ruined the listening experience. I don’t generally like abridged audiobooks but make an exception for Jason Isaacs. He IS Jackson Brodie so this time I spent another credit to get this book with him narrating, even though I already have the longer version. Well worth it. I love the deft way Kate Atkinson handles all the weaving timelines and such a big cast of characters. She always saves something very special for the last few lines as well. Loved it!!
