Summary

Welcome to the Orthodox Church - its history, theology, worship, spirituality, and daily life. This friendly guide provides a comprehensive introduction to Orthodoxy, but with a twist: listeners learn by making a series of visits to a fictitious church, and get to know the faith as new Christians did for most of history, by immersion. Mathews-Green provides commentary and explanations on everything from how to "venerate" an icon, the Orthodox understanding of the atonement, to the Lenten significance of tofu. It's the perfect book for inquirers and newcomers, but even listeners who have been Orthodox all their lives say they learned things they never knew before. Enjoyable, easy-to-listen-to and leavened with humor, Welcome to the Orthodox Church is a gracious guide to the ancient faith of the Christian East.

A beautifully written and presented book.

A truly remarkable book which strengthened my belief in the Orthodox faith. listening to it as I drove around the UK and I've since bought the same in book form. Thank you Frederica.

Oh my! Everything I hoped, and SO much more!

I wanted to learn more about the Orthodox faith and practices, and this book certainly gave me a whole lot to think about and research. The author/reader's style is the best I've ever heard in an audio book. I never got bore with this book - not once.

I wept. I laughed. I wept some more, at the beauty of this faith. When the book was finally over, I exclaimed out loud, "No!!"

This lengthy book has left me wanting so much more.

Exceptional overview of Orthodoxy

If you could sum up Welcome to the Orthodox Church in three words, what would they be?

Orthodoxy is a treasure! "Dig for it!"

What was one of the most memorable moments of Welcome to the Orthodox Church?

The Conclusion puts it all into perspective.

Have you listened to any of Frederica Mathewes-Green’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No - this is the first of more to come.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

If you mean turning the bright light on in a world of half-lit images, then yes. Frederica's insight and simple explanations answered questions I didn't know I had.

Any additional comments?

This is a must read for the serious religious scholar to casual wonderer looking for a glimpse of the Church Jesus the Christ breathed into existence.

I wept

I'm a fairly recent inquirer and had heard about Mathewes-Green through my church friends- in fact, she has apparently made an appearance at my parish before. I was really just looking for some educational material to prepare for my cathechism and came across this, mostly expecting some basic theology and liturgical etiquette. This I did find. I was not, however, expecting such gentle, poignant wisdom as to leave me prostrate in front of my icon corner, reciting the Jesus prayer in between sobs. Frederica put things into words which I could never express but which I had always believed. This is a gorgeous work.

Wonderful introduction book

One of the first books I heard as a Catechumin. Using it now with the person I'm helping through Catechumin. Great lay out, good details. Only minor issue is the speaker is very soft spoken so if you're driving it can be hard to hear without cranking the volume up to max. Besides that VERY MINOR issue this is a perfect book.

Newcomers Must Read This Book!

I read this book when I first started looking into Orthodoxy and now I’m reading it for the third time after 1.5 years of seeking and being a catechumen. This book is just so good and, with the pandemic, we haven’t had the most “normal” conversion experience. So this book offers a more typical look into orthodoxy than we’ve gotten to experience. Now I’m at a point where I’m giving it to my parents (Dad is a retired United Methodist Pastor) and my mother-in-law (a lifelong Protestant Christian) to help them understand our choice. Presbytery Mathews-Green: thank you so much for the work you put into this book!

Would be best if someone else was reading

I love her writing but not her performance. She is so soft spoken that she frequently trails off to inaudible on the last word of a sentence. This is the first book of hers that I've 'read' on Audible. I wonder if her performance has improved since then.
