Story
First published in 2008, this is a revised and expanded second edition of the author's well-received book on modern Cornish traditional witchcraft. As Gemma Gary says in her new preface, there is no 'set in stone' organised witch tradition in Cornwall, and folk magic practices have always been unique to their individual practitioners. However, in this excellent book she has managed to expertly draw together a workable new tradition from historical sources and the surviving rites, charms, and folk customs of Cornwall and the West Country.

Story
Regional traditional witchcraft is an animistic form of witchcraft that moves away from the religious harvest festivals and fertility-minded practices associated with the more common Wiccan form of witchcraft. Very few of us in this age are farmers or dependent upon crops and harvests. Regional traditional witchcraft teaches people to find their craft in their own backyards, in the uncultivated land or urban cityscape alike, and in their ancestors rather than in ancient foreign deities or in a neopagan religious form of witchcraft. It's not about where you're from but where you are.

In this book, third generation hereditary witch Lisa Lister explains the history behind witchcraft, why identifying as a healer in past centuries led women to be burned at the stake, and why the witch is reawakening in women across the world today. This book provides an overview of the different schools of witchcraft and the core principles and practices within them.

The Narrator is so annoying
Really didn’t like this book.
I can see it might give new witches a sense of confidence to go their own way but if you know anything about witchcraft it’s pretty dull.
It’s mainly the writer boasting about her own practice and a load of old fluff and nothing very deep.
Just a load of hot topics that every witch is posting about on Instagram like
‘The patriarchy’, DNA and skin colour which seems to come up in so many of the chapters.
How is sounded...
Me me me...
When I did this...
When I did that...
Yawn.
It’s the least magical book on witch craft I’ve ever read/listened too.
Then on top of that the narrator has the most annoying voice and you can hear her breathe really loudly and deeply after every couple of words
Very disappointing as this book was highly recommended on YouTube reviews.

Narration doesn't match material
I know the author personally and I feel like the over dramatic reading of her material served as an injustice to her work. The narrator read it as a dramatic horror fiction which was super distracting and immediately took me out of the material. If it was just toned down a bit it would've been fine.
It is also my understanding that the author had no say in who narrated the book? I think that is very poor business practice and client relations.

please try the sample before buying. I waited for this title to come out for so long and immediately bought it. when I began to listen I couldn't believe my ears. I couldn't focus on the content at all due to the over dramatized over exaggerated annunciation. I love the author... wrong choice in narrator.

Good book - Narration wasn't my favorite.
I enjoyed the content of this book for the most part, but I found myself only able to listen to it for short periods of time due to the narration style. I'm not trying to be mean, but the narrator's way of reading the book made the words sound more condescending than they probably meant to be. I also just didn't like the narrator's speaking style - it was too, i don't know how to explain this, maybe dramatic? This was hard to listen to, and I generally enjoy audiobooks. I probably should have bought this as a physical book instead.

More like listening to an Opinions column
I was drawn to the title and having some familiarity with Zakroff's work, I was fully expecting this to be one of my keepers; a solid go-to that I would reference regularly but that was not the case for me. The reviews are stellar, and while I did listen to a sample, I was hoping the narrator's tone would warm up but it never did. There's a disconnect in Zakroff's somewhat nonchalant point of view and Beresford's formal, "news reporter" tone.
I will say that I love the undercurrent of this book: There are no rules in modern witchcraft. Do what feels right for you, knowing there is no one right or true to way to this path. I think of some of the early days of the rising magic/witchcraft/pagan/wicca movement where books that prescribed exact words, rituals or initiations were not only the norm but the expectation from readers hoping to "do it right". But, those days are over...finally..,and this book gives you the permission you (think) you need to just make your own way. For that, I thank Zakroff.
Still, the disconnect of her words and the narrator's tone is too much to overlook. As was the feeling like I just read someone's personal blog filled with her opinions of the subject as well as her pet peeves and other things that she thinks are ridiculous. I suppose if you're completely unfamiliar with witchcraft, this is a good beginner's entry into the existing attitudes within the path, but don't rely on it to provide the fundamentals. Some would argue that's the point of this book, but it still feels like having to listen to a lot of talking without the benefit of learning.

Great for beginners and as a refresher
Information in this book was straight up and a good read. the only difficulty I had with this book was the narrator. The audiobook is read by someone who must think they are a sportscaster or some sort of news anchor. I felt like I was listening to the 11:00 News or 20/20 every time I got into the audiobook.
