About this listen

The star of Marvel’s first Asian superhero film, Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, tells his own origin story of being a Chinese immigrant, his battles with cultural stereotypes and his own identity, becoming a TV star, and landing the role of a lifetime.

In this honest, inspiring and relatable memoir, Simu Liu chronicles his family's journey from China to the bright lights of Hollywood with wit and humour.

As a child, Simu's parents left him in the care of his grandparents, bringing him to Canada when he was four. However, Simu soon senses that his new guardians lack the gentle touch of his grandparents, resulting in harsh words and hurt feelings between him and his parents, who find their son emotionally distant and difficult to relate to.

Although they are related by blood, they are separated by culture, language, and values.

As Simu grows up, he plays the part of the pious child flawlessly – he gets straight As, performs exceptionally in national math competitions and makes his parents proud. However, as time passes, he grows increasingly disillusioned with the path that has been laid out for him.

Less than a year out of University, he is fired from his first job and hits rock bottom. He develops a determination centred around creating his own path. This leads him to not only succeeding as an actor, but also opens the door to reconciling with his parents.

We Were Dreamers is a story about growing up between cultures, finding your family, and becoming the master of your own extraordinary circumstance.

I have had a decent life so far, with a lot of things to be grateful for, but I still have trouble controlling and understanding my emotions. As a second-generation chinese immigrant to Sweden, I really needed to read this. I can relate to so much of how Liu have felt and strongly believe that this book have changed me.

If you are second generation immigrant, especially if you have asian etnicity, listen to this book NOW. You wont regret it.

Simu Liu’s story about his tumultuous climb as an Asian artist in America candidly outlined the present-day biases that still stand in the global arts scene. An inspiring read through and through that traces back to the generations before him that made everything he is today. This book has certainly gave me a little bit of hope as an aspiring Asian artist and musician with a dream to one day stand on a stage like his with my own Asian name.

A story of grit and hope

I was very put off by the sample snippet on Audible, but have done a 180.

The book is beautifully written and moved me to tears at multiple points because of its personal resonance, and its innocence. It’s hard sometimes to attach that trait to one’s elders.

I’m pretty sure a ghost writer was involved (a damn good one I wish I could praise individually), and aside from the lucid and playful writing, the stories shared by Simu about his family are ones that have needed to come together, somewhere, to reflect such a crucial history, “universal” to tens of millions in the Chinese diaspora. I for one really needed to hear them.

Thank you to Simu, his family, and his team for having the courage and execution to deliver such a whole work of storytelling.

A beautiful memoir that dives smoothly into connection between time and culture
