About this listen

A woman; a war; a child that changed everything.

Spanning the sweep of the 20th century, We Must Be Brave is a luminous and profoundly moving novel about the people we rescue and the ways in which they rescue us back.

She was fast asleep on the back seat of the bus. Curled up, thumb in mouth. Four, maybe five years old.

I turned around. The last few passengers were shuffling away from me down the aisle to the doors. ‘Whose is this child?’ I called.

Nobody looked back.

December, 1940. As German bombs fall on Southampton, the city’s residents flee to the surrounding villages. In Upton village, amid the chaos, newly married Ellen Parr finds a girl sleeping, unclaimed at the back of an empty bus. Little Pamela, it seems, is entirely alone.

Ellen has always believed she does not want children, but when she takes Pamela into her home the child cracks open the past Ellen thought she had escaped and the future she and her husband, Selwyn, had dreamed for themselves. As the war rages on, love grows where it was least expected, surprising them all. But with the end of the fighting comes the realisation that Pamela was never theirs to keep....

A story of courage and kindness, hardship and friendship, We Must Be Brave explores the fierce love we feel for our children and the astonishing power of that love to endure.

Critic reviews

"This is storytelling at its best. Wise, generous and captivating." (Sarah Winman, author of Tin Man)

"Oh, I loved this book so much! It’s strikingly authentic, beautifully written, and a wonderfully touching depiction of the families people create for themselves when blood relatives let them down. It broke my heart and glued it together again. Just perfect." (Jill Mansell, author of Rumour Has It)

"We Must Be Brave is a wonderful novel. A beautifully written story of love and loss, with thoughtfully crafted characters and so much to think about long after you’ve finished reading it. It is one of those novels you can talk about for hours - the perfect book club read." (AJ Pearce, author of Dear Mrs Bird)

I listened to this on audio and thoroughly enjoyed the storyline, beautiful prose and a great performance from the narrator.

A moving and gentle story of love, loss and understanding told for the most part through the eyes of Ellen, spanning her lifetime but focussing mainly on the years when she was caring for a young child. Would very much recommend.

Such a complete joy from start to finish! My husband, daughter and I listened to this on a long car journey and we all loved it. A lovely gentle story, but not without twists and drama. Evocative and beautifully written, I adored every minute. Very often I find the narration can be irritating, but this was perfect. I’m going to buy the hard copy for a few people. Five stars all round

A maternal love story, beautifully drawn in wartime England, and later years, this is a tale that will capture your heart. I really enjoyed it but couldn’t help wishing that Ellen or Pamela had done something sooner - a bit like my feelings about Captain Corelli.

Generally well read by Louise Jamieson (predominantly) but I kept wishing someone had told her it’s either “a hotel” or “an ‘otel” as the many instances of “an hotel” with a stressed h grated somewhat.

Tender and evocative story

Having downloaded several titles in a row and had to return a couple and not enjoyed the others much, it was such a joy to come across ‘We Must Be Brave’ by Frances Liardet. Beautifully read with tenderness and poise by the narrators and with prose honed with the skill and care of a master craftsman, this was one of my favourite books of the year so far. The south coast setting is evoked with such authenticity it’s clear the author knows the area well and her characters spring to life so we feel for them - in particular Ellen, the protagonist - as we would ourselves. Liardet has an exceptional gift when it comes to conveying the passions and idiosyncrasies of children and the little details that make up our lives - from rough blankets to Curly Wurlies - and I really would urge anyone who is interested in emotional interior life, the history of Britain and parenting by those who are not the ‘natural’ parents to read this wonderful novel. In this respect it may particularly tug at the heartstrings of stepparents, adoptive parents, foster carers and their charges, plus those experiencing fertility issues, though I cannot promise it won’t make such readers cry - it had me blubbing as I did the ironing. The author, like me, is the daughter of parents who lived through the Second World War and were profoundly impacted by it, and readers/listeners with that background may find strong resonance too. That I messaged Frances to say I’d loved it and she responded within the hour only enhanced my sense of the preciousness of the experience, and I hope others find their way to it and feel as moved as I did.

An absolute joy of an audiobook

I struggled with this at the start with what I thought to be an over sweet beginning that was then contrasted with the dire circumstances of a live on poverty in the 30s. By the end I recognised the basic simplicity of the story line of love and friendship can be supreme even in modern times. Carefully crafted through believable characters it does not challenge the listener but slowly invades your thoughts with its positive message.

Slow burner that's invasive.
