Summary

The Custodian Guard have stood watch over the Emperor's Palace on Terra since the foundation of the Imperium. Charged with protecting the Master of Mankind from all threats, within and without, their fearsome resolve is renowned throughout the galaxy, and their golden armour is the last thing that a would-be assassin or saboteur will ever see.

Alongside the Null-maidens of the Sisters of Silence, who are anathema to psykers and sorcerers alike, there is no threat to the Golden Throne that they alone cannot vanquish...until now.

Enthralling

I was hooked from start to end with everything being told. The inclusion of multiple points of view with different voice actors adding an even further depth to each characters views was a very nice touch.

Excellent - one of the best 40K experiences so far

Told by three narrators at various points, the 40K universe undergoes a fairly terrifying upheaval in the status quo. What makes this novel a huge leap forward compared to more run-of-the-mill contemporaries is that Wraight truly shapes his own part of the cosmos with living, breathing humans and transhumans alike. The idea of three narratives allows us to appreciate the scale on both a personal and global level while at all times keeping a tight rein on plot and characterisation.

For one of the Custodes' revelations in particular this pays off handsomely and credit to Wraight for continuing to develop his own mythos rather borrowing from others. The narrations are excellent and really take this to the upper heights. I rarely venture beyond Heresy novels and this one demands its own series. Well done to all for an essential addition to the Black Library

The best 40K book I have listened to.

Expertly narrated and extremely well written, this tells the story from the first person perspective of three characters, and chronicles some of the major recent events in the 40k universe.

40K books can often be a bit formulaic and turn into never ending adjective-laden descriptions of violence, but this avoids the usual clichés and is all the better for it, concentration on the view of minor players in the galaxy shaking events contained within.

My favourite 40k audiobook, and I've listened to quite a few!

Amazing work!

If I could I would have stood up and given Chris Wraight and the narrators a standing ovation. Absolutely brilliant in all fronts. I'm starting it ver immediately and I'm sure I'll pick up tons of things I missed.

Enjoyable from start to finish

Loved this story, it has a good cross between narrative and bolter open. I would suggest this to anyone wanting to know more of how Custodes and Null Maidens think.

stay away from the black library app

I purchased this audiobook along with another and an audio drama on the black library app... Due to unfortunate complications with the BL app I had to make the purchases again; I'll gladly do so seeing as though I loveed each one of my purchases that much!
I have listened to each one more than 10 times separately and may end up adding the "carrion throne" to my collection. 😏 I must be kidding myself I am definitely going to add it to my collection.

My collection is as follows:
"The master of mankind"
"The emperor's legion"
pretty soon hereafter the review "the carrion throne"
"The interrogation of Salvador Lermentov"

Great to see Black Library on audible!

I liked the story more than I expected (didn’t know what to expect though). Chris Wraight is one of my favorite BL authors- & I think his writing helped carry the book. The characters have depth to them, but the action sequences are well written & not confusing.

I know a fair amount of the story that led up to this setting- so I can’t recommend just blindly diving in.

loved it, very well performed and awsome story.

The narration was absolutely stellar. The voices and narration style matched the story so well. I am a die hard warhammer 40k fan and really look forward to any future works with any of you 3 that narrated this. Thank you for bringing my passion of 40k from my eyes to my ears to make my long commutes bearable.
