None are so close to the heart and history of the Chapter as the man that embodies all that was great about the First Legion and all that is shameful about the Dark Angels. In his story is writ the tale of the Horus Heresy and the fall from Enlightenment in a single long life. Glory, honour, pride, shame and betrayal weave a tapestry of truth and lies that the Supreme Grand Masters of the Dark Angels have sought to understand and unbind across 10 bloody millennia.

At last a Dark Angels novel for grown ups
- By Lertimo on 10-04-21
Summary
The Custodian Guard have stood watch over the Emperor's Palace on Terra since the foundation of the Imperium. Charged with protecting the Master of Mankind from all threats, within and without, their fearsome resolve is renowned throughout the galaxy, and their golden armour is the last thing that a would-be assassin or saboteur will ever see.
Alongside the Null-maidens of the Sisters of Silence, who are anathema to psykers and sorcerers alike, there is no threat to the Golden Throne that they alone cannot vanquish...until now.

Really enjoyed it. thought the story tellers were fantastic, especially the main reader as his was told in reflection while the other two were in the present.
Covers Palace intrigue and the Return of Guilliman, though the Primarch only has a very small part.

stay away from the black library app
I purchased this audiobook along with another and an audio drama on the black library app... Due to unfortunate complications with the BL app, I had to make the purchases again; I'll gladly do so seeing as though I loved each one of my purchases that much!
I have listened to each one more than 10 times separately and may end up adding the "carrion throne" to my collection. 😏 I must be kidding myself I am definitely going to add it to my collection.
I have purchased this book four times now; only one was a gift!!
My collection is as follows:
"The master of mankind"
"The emperor's legion"
pretty soon hereafter the review "the carrion throne"
"The interrogation of Salvador Lermentov"

Great to see Black Library on audible!
I liked the story more than I expected (didn’t know what to expect though). Chris Wraight is one of my favorite BL authors- & I think his writing helped carry the book. The characters have depth to them, but the action sequences are well written & not confusing.
I know a fair amount of the story that led up to this setting- so I can’t recommend just blindly diving in.

Surprisingly compelling 40k Novel
I've seen the same sentiment hit other reviews on here, but just wanted to say that I figured I'd like this book but was happily surprised by how much I really did enjoy it. Good if you liked the sisters of silence in the 30k books, the custodians or just the Dark Imperium series (set between Guillimans crusade back to Terra and Dark Imperium though largely centered on other characters).
