About this listen

Mark Johnson's father had LOVE tattooed across his left hand, but that didn't stop the beatings. The Johnson children would turn up to school with broken fingers and chipped teeth, but no one ever thought of investigating their home life. Mark just slipped through the cracks, and kept on falling. For years.

Constantly in trouble at school, he began stealing at the age of seven, was drinking by the age of eight, and took his first hit of heroin at age 11. Art college beckoned the sensitive and intelligent boy, but he ended up in Portland prison instead.

With searing honesty, Wasted documents Mark's descent into the very depths of addiction and criminality. Homeless and hooked on heroin and crack, no one, least of all Mark, believed he would survive. And yet he somehow found the strength to pull through, and now runs his own thriving tree-surgery business, employing and helping other recovering addicts.

Both shocking and inspirational, this is a heartbreaking and compelling account of one man's struggle to save himself, and help save others in the process.

I was shocked when I started listening to this book but soon I had to realise that the story of Mark Johnson's life is not unique. Domestic abuse, alcohol and drug addictions, homelessness... are reality for too many people. But this is not a story of misery and despair, this is story of hope and inspiration. This memoir illustrates how cruel life can be but also how much one can achieve if they only want.
This is a great and inspiring listen!

This book has been written by Mark Johnson and covers the extraordinary battle that he went through with his addictions. This shows that there is a way out with guts and determination and the help of others along the way. Well done Mark very well written and honest too. This book should surely help others along life?s path everyone needs to give it a listen. If it helps just one person its done its job although I feel it has something to teach everyone.

I work with clients, some with similar stories but I wanted to understand more closely their journey so that I can be more effective in working alongside them. Difficult call to invite clients to read it for themselves and for Chapter 3 on its own might give the hope that one looking for change might find helpful but the authors experience is so intimately shared in the chapters 1 &2 that it might trigger past cravings. Respect to the Author.

The honesty is breathtaking
