Summary

As the Emperor marshals his armies to reclaim the galaxy for the glory of mankind, one by one his Space Marine Legions are reunited with their missing primarchs. The XVIII Legion are still waiting to find their true identity, unaware their own lord has been found. In the Taras Division, legionaries face annihilation as they take a last, desperate stand against a monstrous ork invasion.

Meanwhile, on Nocturne, Vulkan has raised and trained a new force of warriors. Now it is the time for him to lead his sons into battle. Now it is the time for him to truly don the mantle of primarch, not only to save one half of his Legion but to forge a new, indivisible whole.

Lacklustre battles set before the HH

I couldn’t wait to read this story about Vulkan. A chance to delve into one of the most noble primarches of the hours Hersey.

The primarch series has so far been a mixed bag of insight into the origins of these heroes of the imperium. And a number of stories that have been nothing more than bolter and battles.

This story was the latter. A disappointing listen that lacked any further insight Into the 18th chapter or into its leader.

Although narrated well, for those of you looking for a more in-depth story. I would advise to look elsewhere.

More an SM Battles novel than a Primarch novel

Very little to do with Vulkan other than the fact that he is present during these events.

More like an SM Battles novel (and an extremely mediocre one at that).

GW really need to decide what they want from the Primarchs novels as they are horribly inconsistent. Some give a great insight in to backgrounds and others like this one, merely feature a Primarch and no more.

Very disappointing.

Not good at all

Just like the last David Annandale book I read, the roboute Guilliman one, it’s just astartes smashing orks for 9 hours. No character development or nuanced story telling, literally just salamanders killing orcs, it was a chore to get through. Plus the narrator affects this weird Jamaican accent for Vulkan and some of the other salamanders that is just so silly!

A bit something and nothing

Like most of the Primarchs series, well read, but adding little to the larger story of the Horus Heresy. .

Salamander's complete.....

Great intro to the Genesis of the Salamanders.
I was unsure at the start but all came together perfectly.
well written, spoken, presented....fully recommended.

Struggled to enjoy this even though the ending was good

Only persevered with this book as I have every intention of going through all the Warhammer stories. This one I found very difficult to get into and the first 6 chapters were dull. I did enjoy the remaining few chapters. The performance was ok, but not wow.

Amazing!! Must listen

Wasn’t too sure initially as it was shorter than most. But the inspirational story of the beginnings of the 18th legion and their primarch will give you goosebumps

Great story and performance..

A chapter I have always followed and wanted to learn more about.

This was a story which supported the Salamander Lore and it was certainly top notch....only issue...it was too short!!!

I read it in one go...!!

Not a primarch book,

The book is supposed to be about Vulcan, buts hes not in about half of it. Good salamdanders book; not a good Vulcan book.

Poor Background

Maybe I’m spoiled by the Primarchs book on Angron, but this offers no insight into Vulkan, and only minimal ones into his Legion. Very disappointed - I knew nothing about Vulkan going on, and know next-to-nothing finishing up.

Good book with great narration!

Jonathan Keeble does this book a wonder by narrating voices with different accents, he presents each character with depth and feeling as if we were in the story ourselves.

The story itself seems a tad bit lacking in background and depth, but for its length is a great feature packed with action to add more flavor to the deserving salamanders legion.

Great!

Excellent story, and Johnathan Keeble, kills the narration. I was literally crying on my drive home from work, as the power behind this story was conveyed.

Anvil

The story was great except when the word anvil was used something like 40 times. Anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil, anvil.

Just perfect!

How could it not be perfect? Vulcan bringing the 18th together for the first time? Keeble was the reason I chose this book and I wasn't disappointed. I wish he could re-record some other books. Some voices aren't suited for 40k but Keeble is a 40k master. A good book to start with if you're going to follow the story of Vulcan and the 18th.

Exceptional! Required listening.

This was an exceptionally well written story. So rich in imagery and conflict breathtaking in scope I have listened to it 3 times so far and I'm sure that I will listen again
