Goes Snicker Snack
One of my favorite Light Space Opera. The second after Through the Looking Glass and precedes Manxome Foe and Claws that Catch.
The story of the first converted Boomer Submarine to be turned into an interstellar space ship, and then to venture out of the solar system using an unobtainium box star drive. Actually apart from the drive.. well drives as they encounter others the science isnt bad. courtesy of Dr Travis Taylor the model John Ringo used for Dr William Weaver in the first book.
The Vorpal Blade carries out a "where no One has gone before" mission to the stars seeking signs of the Dreen, the Biological borg race that assimilate other races with plenty of seasoning. Having protected the Earth in the first book cutting the wormholes that linked the Dreen Invaders to earth the story moves on to trying to locate them in space.. in order assess the danger to the world.
On the way they look at a few systems and chart planets as a way to test humanity (and the Adar, an allied race's) ability to survive the hard stuff.
I found it amusing.. exciting.. they have a wealth of over the top characters providing multiple protagonists, tho the main ones are Dr., now Lt Commander Weaver and Private Bergstrasse of what becomes the first Space Marine company, taking pretty shattering casualties doing it. A child of the military SciFi genre but i like it no less for that.
I have avoided what happens to give people the chance to enjoy it. It is light operetta rather than space opera maybe, sad, happy hopeful and with looming disasters. I have hinted towards Star Trek in my comments as i find it hopeful in the Roddenberry fashion, despite a lot more than red shirts buying the farm. Despite that it avoids the "We're all doomed" zeitgeist that seems to infect so much current media output. In the end its hopeful and funny. My opinion. YVMV

Great book well worth listening too!
Where does Vorpal Blade rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It's quite a good sci-fi book and Particularly good for a second book in the series
Who was your favorite character and why?
Miller is deafly my favourite character in the book, and reminds me very much of Adams out of the paladin of shadows series by John Ringo
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Fighting a Crabapuss in the new terraform world was quite interesting but I would say that marines in this should all have redshirts ( Star Trek fans will understand this)😉
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This was a great book that had me laughing with tears down my face at one stage some of the asides are absolutely brilliant
Any additional comments?
I'm now going onto the third book and I really hope it's as good as this one

Another fun Ringo book
This is the second in the Looking Glass Series and
you should start with Book #1 titled Into The Looking Glass.
Ringo always has lots of action and surprises, so a
submarine redesignes into a faster than light spaceship
is on it's way.

very good
What made the experience of listening to Vorpal Blade the most enjoyable?
I just enjoy the John Ringo can hold and develop a story line and the characters in the story. His books come to life when you read/listen to them.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Vorpal Blade?
I really can not select any one most memorable moment of the book. t was caught up from the very beginning, and could not put it down the first listen.
Which character – as performed by L. J. Ganser – was your favorite?
They were all good.
Any additional comments?
great listen, excellent writer and good narrator.

More of Ringos great writing
Well this is a little slower then the first book and it takes a while to pick up but once it gets going it stays going all the way to the end, the beginning is sorta a catch-up on what has happened since the end of the first book and quickly introduces characters that are going to be big in the book so its needed.
The Vorpal Blade is actually the A.S.S. (Alliance Space Ship) Vorpal Blade named by Aliens that dont understand acronyms but no one wanted to piss them off by rejecting the name so thats what it is - oh, yea, and the ship has a huge blade sticking out of the front of it, hence its name.
My major complaint is that all the swear words are replaced with "Grap" and "Maulk", like "You mother-grapper" or "Grap you" and "Thats bull Maulk" this is just stupid as ever, the first book wasnt like this at all so I just dont understand it, maybe its Travis Taylor he wasnt named in the first book.
Other then that my only complaint is that its a little strange as in the dreen arent really in here seeing how they were the only actual enemy in the last book this is strange, yea the whole story is about them going out looking for them and they only find these huge crabpuss creatures that are like crabs and octopuses and the ship gets captured and you wont believe how it gets away.
There is something that is happening that isnt explained but its a one or two line phrases about cold and heat, it makes sense in the next book so make sure you get Maxome Foe and the last one Claws that Catch

Excellent performance for a fun ride.
I've always enjoyed this novel, and I found that
the narrating served it well. Looking forward to hearing the rest.
the narrator, LJ Ganser, did an excellent job with rendering voices that were unique for each character.

The Blade that slices
Would you listen to Vorpal Blade again? Why?
Yes I would the story continued on from Into the looking glass, not just in story but the funny scenes with Bill weaver and Miller. and the added character of Two gun just seems to fit, an he story was good it made you think did and try to figure out did they find the bad guys or some new bad guys.
What other book might you compare Vorpal Blade to and why?
I would compare it to a Hymn before Battle, Only because its 1. a space story, and 2. because it has its funny moments as did A hymn before battle.
Have you listened to any of L. J. Ganser’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have to admit that at first I didn't care for L.J. Ganser I was so used to Marc Vietor reading for John Ringo's books, but now that I have read into the Looking glass and Vorpal Blade it seems fitting that a different voice do the different saga Ganser does a good Job.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
the banter between Two gun and the other Space Marines and between Bill Weaver and Chief Miller I always seem to laugh at them
Any additional comments?
again John Ringo hits a home run and it seem that the character is Ringo's Co- author Travis Taylor I seen a video of him and as soon as I heard him speak I said out laud that has to be were Bill Weaver comes from.
I highly recommend reading both into the Looking Glass an Vorpal Blade if you Like military space stories you will not be disappointed in This book or this Saga

Great but has some quirks.
Any additional comments?
Good book but fake "bad words" were over used. I read a post talking about this issue but dismissed it as whineing. When the Marines were talking or yelling you would hear "Holy gunk!" and a couple other words over and over. Marines while deployed may use foul language. Get used to it. If real words can't be used then I understand. Bottom line, omit false words or use real ones.
