About this listen

The scar across the side of Jack’s head is the visible price. The risk to his friends at the academy is the hidden price. His challenge is how to balance the risks.

The final stage of his training is a shakedown cruise on an old minesweeper, barely able to achieve FTL entry and exit.

Midway through their cruise, the minesweeper collides with an ancient alien wreck, ripping the sides off the starship. Jack’s team of bots help seal the combined wreck to prevent air loss. Ghost, a nanolife form from the alien wreck, provides assistance.

Jack and his girlfriend, Sofia, are the only survivors, and air, food, and supplies are critical.

The countdown of days to survive is ticking.

No wonder the Royal Family are angry.

And there’s still a price on Jack’s head.

From the outset the protagonist is the quintessential Gary-Stu. Deus-ex-machina's occur throughout. Still was enjoyable.

A Gary-Stu space romp

The first half of this story is spent on showing how joylessly fantastic the unquestionable Jack Foster is as he tears through space navy school with a gift AI and robot ensemble that was mystery possibly alien tech that he just fires up in his dorm room. All whilst persued by serially inept bad guys. In fact everyone around Jack suffers from his dumbing field apart from the obligatory love interest, who inevitably is not quite at his level. So much so I wondered if Jack was not human. Certainly the synthetics had more charisma. I quite like an OP MC but I sort of lost faith in the author when Jack took a supersonic round to the head that fortunately was only a flesh wound. Eight days later in the doc box he only had a manly scar to show for it.

There is no arc to this story really. Jack starts off super quantum space awesome and finishes the same, just with a few 'righteous' kills.

Only the excellent narration kept me going right up to the bitter end.

Wonderless.
