Summary

Cos'è accaduto, dopo venti anni, della mitica amicizia dei Tre Moschettieri, poi allargatasi al guascone D'Artagnan, meno nobile ma non meno valoroso, anzi? Come in molti sequel, Dumas si trova a scrivere il suo secondo libro (nel 1845, un anno dopo la pubblicazione dei "Tre Moschettieri"), e riesce a illustrare con acume e non senza humour come la vita ha cambiato i nostri eroi.

Se D'Artagnan e Porthos sono forse disposti ad offrire il loro braccio in cambio di una promozione e di una baronia, Aramis e Athos sono di uno stato sociale che permette loro di seguire il loro genio, e quindi i quattro si ritroveranno in partiti opposti: i primi per Mazzarino, i secondi per la Fronda, arrivando addirittura a trovarsi gli uni contro gli altri in una guerra fratricida.

Ma l'amore che li lega sarà sempre superiore a qualsiasi scelta di parte, tanto più che la cornice storica delle loro avventure viene descritta puntualmente come un'enorme beffa ai danni del popolo, priva di ogni ideale che possa giustificare la morte di tanti. E la storia continuerà ancora, col terzo volume di questa trilogia, "il Visconte di Bragelonne", il figlio di Athos, che viene descritto e introdotto in questo romanzo.
