"You only torture the ones you love ..."

Any additional comments?

What a pleasure to return to Cold Hollow and the outrageous, colourful and somewhat sinister characters inhabiting this otherwise ordinary little town. Set in glorious countryside, there will soon be a triumvirate of eating places, Sophia's bakery, Carla's Fine Quisine and the Cold Hollow Tavern. So, if this is your first visit - well, you are in for a treat but be prepared for surprises. Loyalties here can run pretty deep.

There is another newcomer to Cold Hollow, also - a parolee who just loves the destructive beauty of fires. He'll obviously fit right in. From Deadly Delilah to Adam the Apple, Ms. Howard has created inhabitants and visitors who are so bizarrely real yet colourful enough to have stepped from a comic book. Quirky stories, too. This time, Myrna the mayor and her husband are kidnapped and held hostage in the mountains. Will the extended family be able to rescue them?

The dialogue is sometimes surreal in content yet expressed in so natural a way it feels authentic and true, giving the speaker even more credibility. I wouldn't want these people as friends but in my head they have become a sort of extended family. The narrator, J Scott Bennet takes it all in his stride. His pace matches exactly the feel of the book: never too fast or emotional but always calmly carrying the story ever onwards. His voice has a pleasant lulling quality to it and, without overacting, he clearly differentiates each character in the dialogue. And he adds just that touch of creepiness which underlies the whole story.

I have loved every book in this series. Each is standalone although part of the pleasure is revisiting the characters to find out just what is happening now ( think 'The Archers', gone mad, on steroids). My thanks to the rights holder for gifting me my copy of Vengeance, via Audiobook Boom. These stories, and the folks who populate them, are addictive and it looks like there will be another book coming soon. I had better start packing my suitcase for another trip to the far from sleepy Cold Hollow.

Delilah is back!!!

I have loved every book in this series so far and have eagerly awaited this. While this was just as twisting and twisted as the other 3, I felt like something was missing and I still can't figure out what!!

Plot wise, this sees the mayor and her husband being kidnapped and held for ransom, so of course her in laws have to step in and rescue them, with the help of some mafia men as well. Will they prevail before it's too late and can they figure out who the mastermind is? The plot was just as twisting and dark as previous ones, but I also felt like it was missing the same magic that the previous ones had. Everything seemed to come too easy and I just didn't connect with this as much as I did the others. Saying that, there is still a lot of twists and turns and surprises in it, that will keep you guessing till the end!!

The characters were all as well written and developed as ever. Delilah is back and as twisted as ever. She is allowed to unleash her inner evil a little more in this one and boy is she..... odd ;)

In all, this was a great read, just not as enchanting as the last few!! Going by the ending, you just know that there is more bad things to come to the "good" folk of Cold Hollow, and I for one, say bring it on!!

J. Scott Bennett is definitely becoming a favourite narrator of mine! I'm not long after finishing one of his middle grade books and then, to come into this one and see how he can change into such sick and twisted characters perfectly, was amazing!! He truly knows how to preform and bring each character alive. I highly recommend you try at least one of his books!!!

I was voluntarily provided this free copy by the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Great addition to the series

Any additional comments?

Thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable. This is how a Suspense/Thriller should be. So many shorter Suspense/Thriller stories lose their way and are disappointing in the end. That does not happen here. This is an on the edge of your seat, hang on for the ride story just like the previous installments. The whole series is creative and original with a unique, twisted and crazy cast of characters.

Mystery, suspense, humor and horror once again combined into a dark, twisted, engaging and interesting story.

Warning: Never underestimate or cross the Gillette family.

Things don't stay calm in Cold Hollow for very long. The game is on. Myrna and Tom have been taken. The question is by whom and why? When two of their own go missing they will stop at nothing to get them back and serve up their own type of justice. Maurice, Adam and Delilah are back in town to help rescue Myrna and Tom. The bad guys are now the good guys in this situation at least. It's an interesting twist to now have the murderer's, thieves and the mafia the good guys?

Delilah. Oh Delilah, you just have to experience her to understand.

J Scott Bennett once again does a fantastic job with the narration. His voice brings the characters to life the minute the story starts. Clearly spoken with a smooth even pace. Great character voices. Perfect match of narrator and story. Very enjoyable.

Entertaining, enjoyable story

I once again enjoyed visiting the town of Cold Hollow and it's unusual and quirky residents. The humour, excitement and suspense come across well and the narration by J Scott Bennett is excellent. He brings the story to life, giving individual voices to the characters and the different accents he does are great. Things never seem to at peace for long in this town, but then with a town full of not quite rehabilitated prisoners and their somewhat deviant families what do you expect! The new parolee seems like a nice guy but his secret obsession surfaces and he unknowingly helps take care of a town problem. I enjoy how the characters and the world as a whole has grown in depth and complexity with each book, yet each book can still be read as a stand-alone, even though there are threads that run from one book to the next. I received the audiobook at no cost and at no obligation to review.

Vengeance for All

Enjoy the creepily strange characters of Cold Hollow.

For those who don't know, Cold Hollow is a small, isolated, Vermont town that has a contract to be a sort of half-way home for parolees and former parolees. Many people come here and thrive, others...not so much.

In the fourth Cold Hollow book, the mayor and her husband have been kidnapped for ransom. The new parolee is not at all what he seems to be. And the town is hit by a nor'easter just before Christmas. As you can guess from the title, someone is out for vengeance, and that results in more vengeance, and so forth. It gets complicated (of course), and I'm going to have to listen again to catch all the nuances.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the publisher, author, or narrator. This is my honest opinion.

Cold Hollow Series is crazy weird, in a good way.

Where does Vengeance rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I've read/listened to better books but, I really like this series. I've read them all, some are better than others but, they're all good.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, that's the best part of Cold Hollow series, the crazy plots. I liked this one in particular and thought it progressed well from the previous books.

Have you listened to any of J. Scott Bennett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have and I think they're all quality performances. I thought this one was a step above the others though.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Cold Hollow, Nothing is as it seems.

Any additional comments?

I was gifted this book by the author/publisher for an unbiased review. I love the Cold Hollow books and have been fortunate enough to read them all in order. They are worth taking a chance on if you like quirky storylines and crazy characters.

Another interesting story

I received a free audiobook in exchange for an honest review. This is the fourth instalment in the Cold Hollow series and sees Myrna and Tom get kidnapped. Then the big guns arrive in Cold Hollow.

This story is humorous in places, and you raise your eyebrows in others. It's best to read/listen to the other books before you read this - just so you know the background.

The writing isn't difficult - there's no really sudden plot twists that leave you wondering who the bad guy is .... really, they are all bad guys in Cold Hollow .... but it isn't a straightforward murder mystery. This series is hard to define. Science fiction? Plain Mystery? Neither .... alternate reality, definitely.

I'm getting used to the author's style of writing, although there are some phrasings that don't particularly work for me and may have stopped me from reading the books originally, but she's growing on me.

Overall, I feel this is a feel good, happy ending story with just enough tease to look forward to the next book, and the continuing adventures of the strange town of Cold Hollow.

Enjoyable

Any additional comments?

This is the first Emilie Howard book I've listened to and found it to be enjoyable. As another reviewer stated it seemed as if the problems were too easy to solve. The Narrator did a wonderful job with the different voices. All in all I would recommend this book as a fun easy read and would enjoy listening to other books by this author.

The butcher is here and cold hollow residents beware

A more unexpected bunch of protagonists I can't recall. The bad guys are the good guys and the real bad guys are no match for this unexpected bunch. With cold hollow you find a unique town with very unique residents with unique connections. Innocent children, serial killers, mafia bosses and their henchmen, and a host of murderers, killers and thieves, and that's just the heroes of the story. Wait till you meet the butcher. Cold hollow will never be the same again. Love this series, author and narrator are a perfect pairing. Recommend for listeners of any genre.
