Summary

The sequel to Heart of the Fae, where Beauty and the Beast meets Irish mythology

Once upon a time....

Heartache dogs the steps of Sorcha of Ui Neill. Although she is home with her family, she is unable to shake the memories of her time in Hy-brasil. She heals with a heavy heart, tells stories with melancholy words, and cannot forget the magic of the Otherworld. When an opportunity arises to return to her beloved Fae Prince, she makes a questionable deal. Dark magic, druidic curses, and a witch open a portal and send her tumbling into the middle of a war she must end for the sake of all who dwell in the Otherworld.

Saving the faeries will not be easy when she has become a woman they fear.

The once-banished king battles his way through the Otherworld, freeing the Lesser Fae with each swing of his sword. Each attack turns Eamonn into something far more beastly than before. Geodes multiply and hinder his movements, harden his heart, and crystalize his resolve.

Together, they face the King of the Seelie Fae and his golden army to end the war that will change the fate of the Otherworld forever.

Emotional Perfection

This is the concluding part of Sorcha and Eamonn's story which started in the Heart of the Fae story which is book 1 of the Otherworld series. I loved that and I am happy to report that this book had the WOW factor just as much as the first one did. Again the story was absolutely awesome and the narration of it was perfection! I actually can't get over just what a marvellous narrator Siobhan Waring is. Most female narrators that I have listened to do a fairly good job at voicing the male characters, but Siobhan actually makes you think you ARE listening to a male. The characters she portrays go from young lads then to girls, to men and women, to gnomes, pixies, selkies, back and fore she tells the story changing her voice and each time she portrays them perfectly. I could listen to her reading all day!

In this story, it was time for Eammon to take back his throne and win back the hearts of his people. To do so put his and Sorcha's life very much in danger. Did they have any chance of winning, would they end up separated by death, how much bloodshed would there be? I am not saying a thing, you will have to read or listen to the story to find out, but obviously you need to read/listen to Heart of the Fae first. That book and this one were the height of fantastic adventure and romance with magic, good versus evil, and I was kept absolutely captivated from beginning to end. I cried happy and sad tears and positively sobbed during parts of the story. It was a good job I was listening to it rather than trying to read it, I wouldn't have been able to see through my tears.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book, this series, it's author and narrator!

4.5

Since Heart of the Fae and Veins of Magic form a duology, neither standing alone, I'm going to write a single review encompassing both. But one of the main takeaway potential readers should understand is this point that they need both books for a complete story.

I really enjoyed this, both the story and the narration. I really like that Hamm's fae are old school scary fae, her female characters are strong and full of agency, and her male ones aren't afraid to show need. I especially appreciated that it was Sorcha who took the lead in most sexual situations.

My only complaint here is how very gendered everything is. While I appreciate that Hamm's goal was to emphasize that both a king and a queen are necessary, neither an accouterment to the other. (A pleasant change from most stories that center a king and make the queen little more than an accessory or political pawn.) But the book leans hard into women being soft and kind and caring and men being violent, rough and in need of tempering. True, Sorcha had to go against that in the course of the story but it was still a strong theme in the book. (As was how much bigger he was than her, another classic gendering technique.)

All in all, however, I can't wait to dive into more of Hamm's writing and Waring's narration.

Note: I received an Audible code for a copy of this book. I chose to listen and review it.
