The language in which this tale is couched is perhaps too florid for contemporary tastes. However after a litt while the reader becomes used to the language which then securely places the story in it's own period not long after the war with Napoleon. It paints a vivid picture of English rural life at the time. Although some of the characters are a little cartoonish and could hardly have been read any other way, the performance was good and Varney very well portrayed. The story and performance held my attention from beginning to end.

Somewhat melodramatic, but still engaging mystery.

Good production and performance. I enjoy the story despite it's ridiculousness at points and the insufferable stupidity of many of the characters (beware the heroine is incredibly annoying). Why doesn't audible offer all the parts of the book?

Why only the first part?
