About this listen

Jack Campbell returns to the world of the New York Times best-selling Lost Fleet novels with a new action-packed military science fiction series that explores the founding of the Alliance...and the men and women who fought to create it.

Earth is no longer the center of the universe. After the invention of the faster-than-light jump drive, humanity is rapidly establishing new colonies. But the vast distances of space mean that the old order of protection and interstellar law offered by Earth has ceased to exist.

When a nearby world attacks, the new colony of Glenlyon turns to Robert Geary, a young former junior fleet officer, and Mele Darcy, a onetime enlisted marine. With nothing but improvised weapons and a few volunteers, Geary and Darcy must face down warships and armored soldiers - or die trying.

As battles rage and pirates take an increasing toll throughout the colonies, the only hope for lasting peace lies with Carmen Ochoa, a "Red" from the anarchic world of Mars, and Lochan Nakamura, a failed politician. They have a plan: to lay the groundwork for mutual defense that could someday grow into an alliance. But if their efforts don't succeed, the growing power of aggressor worlds could turn regions of space founded on freedom into battlefields between the first interstellar empires.

Overall I enjoyed this book, however the accents in the performance were all over the place, and at times completely indeterminable as to where there were meant to be from. The non accented narration was good, but overall it would be better if the accents were not attempted.

Good story let down by accents

Aw! Takes me back to reading Dan Dare & those little commando books DC Thompson used to produce. Awful accents but after a while you get used to them. Fun all round really. I enjoyed it immensely and have just downloaded book 2👍

Where does Vanguard rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is towards the upper half; neither terrible nor excellent. It performs to expectations, but doesn't exceed them by much.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Vanguard?

The battle to retake the land base established on the empty continent.

Which character – as performed by Christian Rummel – was your favourite?

Lt (Captain) Geary.

Any additional comments?

This fits into the universe established by Campbell's Lost Fleet novel series. The plotting is a little predictable; the maverick thrust into an unexpected role by circumstances, for example. The plot moves along briskly enough to retain interest and the reading was sympathetic.

More acceptable than some prequels

Cheesy and far from deep or complex, but you know what, I actually really enjoyed this. Similarly, the narrator is not the best in the world and some of the accents stank! But overall, yep, his voice worked just fine for this book. Actually kind thinking I'll look for a sequel now!

Good silly fun in space

This book was quite nice in regard of giving us the early lore/history that led up to events in later books but it have some problems

My biggest problem in regard to the story itself is that it can be a little hard to know that all the events is within the same story, and not jumping to an entierly new story. Mainly when we enter the space station on the astroid.

Quite nice for early lore to the main series
