Brilliant assessment

Matt is able to put into words the gradual takeover of our major institutions by the new elite, people who think they are superior to the great ‘unwashed’ & who have little time for the opinions of people different to them, particularly in terms of education & professions.

Disenfranchised, disillusioned and distant. The chasms between our politics and populace.

A depressing description of the continuing decline of Britain and how what was predicted by Orwell in 1984 has happened to the Universities. The chasm between the new, so called educated, elite and the neglected, despised and so called uneducated, masses grows and remains unaddressed. The incompatibility between the values of the “Elite” and the successful delivery of public services like health, education both school and university, justice and immigration is made little of; and there is no suggestion of how the decline and impending fall in the function in our public institutions can be averted. Depressing. No vision of a way forward is given.
Conclusion? Our politics, politicians and civil service are dysfunctional, self seeking, disinterested in preventing the failure of our once successful public services and care not for the so called working classes who they despise and oppress. There does not seem to be a vision of a way forward for the provision of actual government of the country. Could their be a revolution? The Elite destroyed Boris so rapidly this seems unlikely but this remains a hope.
Performance is a bit monotonous and the story is repetitive.

The Book of Explanations in Current British Politics

Like many, I have been feeling an earthshaking shift in politics with many changes in outlook, direction, achievement, family and traditions, whether on the left or right.
Whether the reader is older university educated or not, Matthew Goodwin’s book explains very clearly to all readers what has caused this unrest.
Because of it’s important content, I am buying the hard copy for reference to the different topics presented.
A highly recommended book.

Interesting take on our political moment

I have enjoyed Matthew Goodwin’s books in the past and this one is similarly enlightening. Filled with detail and statistical evidence to reinforce his assertions, a must read for those interested in British politics.

Helps to make sense of modern politics

This came highly recommended by a friend. I'm glad to have read it, as Matthew Goodwin's analysis of Westminster and multiple pieces of research helps to explain why such vast swathes of British society feel that politicians and the state are no longer serving them.

Detailed study of attitudes, not dogma.

Very detailed look at the actual attitudes of the British and English. it should be a wake up call for anyone hoping to represent the electorate as they are not as they wish them to be.

Extremely interesting and informative

Goodwin is objective and extremely well-researched. His book is a must-read for anyone who wants to follow and understand British politics.
I didn't agree with all his conclusions, especially on why Liz Truss crashed, but that dows not take away from the overall value of the book.
One recommendation: he should not read his own books. Goodwin's voice is monotone and tiresome to listen to for any length of time.
Get a professional voice actor to do it.

An absolute revelation

Have been very uncomfortable with British politics for years but could never put my finger on why I felt this way.

Listening to this opened my eyes to the liberal progressive shift we’ve experienced at the hands of the “elite” — those in positions of power, influence and authority.

Let the fight back begin as we rid ourselves through the bonfire of the vanities. Policy created for the country not yet more Davos disciples

A MUST READ tour de force. Brilliant, honest, sober analysis of modern Britain and the failings of its politics, politicians and ruling class. Shows how over 45 years we have arrived at the current mess. Gives voice to voiceless millions unrepresented in modern British institutions, political and cultural discourse, and stripped of cultural value. Says out loud what needs to be said. The most important book on British politics of the last ten years.

Interesting analysis

While I’d love to know how many times “new elite” is said here, if you get past that, then the analysis in this book is very insightful and well constructed. Worth a listen for people of all persuasions, as we seek to understand the world around us.
