Silence can be deafening.

Jean McClellan spends her time in almost complete silence, limited to just one hundred words a day. Any more, and a thousand volts of electricity will course through her veins.

Now the new government is in power, everything has changed. But only if you’re a woman.

Almost overnight, bank accounts are frozen, passports are taken away and seventy million women lose their jobs. Even more terrifyingly, young girls are no longer taught to read or write.

For herself, her daughter, and for every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice. This is only the beginning…

Predictable, cliche and cheesy. A real shame as the concept was so interesting. Passed time

Really enjoyed this audio and Jean’s story. Did not disappoint. There were chapters where I couldn’t stop listening and racked up 3 or 4 hours in one sitting!

Perfect dystopian fiction for handmaid’s tale type

good story line, very similar premise to the handmaid's tale. felt a little rushed at the end but still a good listen

something different to handmaid's tale

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

The story relies on some far too convenient changes of character in order to wind up to the unlikely conclusion. The science is complicated, which would be fine, but it serves no purpose as it actually doesn't make sense with the story in the end. The unnecessary (if realistic) animal cruelty depicted is horrible and also pointless to the story.

Although it starts well, with good character development, the story is overall, unconvincing and not properly explained, although an interesting basic concept. There is a very small cast of people who all know each other and interact day to day, more like the leadership of a small town or village than a whole country. Such as Gather the Daughters. Really lacks the breadth, depth and believability of the great dystopian stories, such as The Handmaids Tale and The Last Midwife.

Nice narration.

Unconvincing
