About this listen
"He came aboard a broken ship,
To Lethis on the waves,
With lies and tricks and evil spells,
Their future, he would pave.
Beware, oh King, the nothing mage,
A force that pierces all,
The golden bell that sings of death,
‘Till lords and empires fall.
In silent dark, in dead of night,
He came in from the cold,
And through their screams and dying gasps,
The bell remained untolled."
At long last, Declan and his companions have arrived at the floating city of Lethis. Safely in neutral territory, the mages can continue their studies and even compete in the legendary Lethian Tournament. That is, until an unwelcome guest disrupts the competition, and Declan finds himself dragged beneath the dark waves and into a world of mystery and fate.
War has come to the denizens of Teralia, and the nothing mage is no exception.
©2020 John Valentine (P)2020 John ValentineAll that being said, I don't really like Declan as a character. He's always kinda seemed a bit wimpish and awkward and he is kinda improving but like, I find it so irritating how he folds like a weak paper towel and literally everything he's done he's had to be Pushed to do. I hate how he puts his ambitions over his friend. The Betrayal of Mia hit So Hard for me. It wasn't even a big scene but it's like, Declan keeps talking about making choices and stuff but he fully always goes with the flow more than anything. He would sit around doing basically nothing if the plot wasn't pushing him, he Says he's got ambition but it only seems to appear at the Worst moments for Taking the Worst Options.
Also, kinda mad he didn't get much worse consequences for disregarding literally Every rule when it comes to interacting with the Fae. And I Know it does result in a lot of terrible stuff anyway but I'm not convinced he wouldn't have folded at the offer even without their interference.
Anyway, I haven't even finished this book and I'm honestly considering DNF-ing it cause the atrocities he's about to commit. I don't know if he'll find a clever way to subvert all expectations but it Really seems like he's about to go through with it and I Can't. This story has never had characters being overly moral and it makes sense for their world and it is a war story so it all fits. But this is Too far, and it just hits a bit too close to home rn with the current political climate. (Not sure if it shows the date on these but it's May 2025 so...)
I recently read Mark of the Fool, that was So Good, it subverted a lot of common tropes in certain wizarding books. The character had drive and drove the plot forward and not so much strung along. This story is just so... Disappointing after reading that. Maybe I'm give it another chance at some point when it won be competing with that in my mind, I'll probably delete this review and write a new one if I do but for now, this stands.
Declan hits new lows
