About this listen

Centering the experiences of Black women allows for richer therapeutic practices for everyone.

“Black feminisms have provided a foundation from which it becomes more possible to speak and write of interconnection―of a spirited life, soul, a natural mystic blowing through the air―and engagement with all of this in therapeutic practice.”

Part thesis, part memoir, and part poetry, this book is unlike any other therapeutic text. Psychotherapist and writer Foluke Taylor explores how the centering of Black women’s experiences in therapeutic scholarship allows for greater space―space for wandering, for wondering, and for deepening narratives―in every therapeutic relationship. Beginning with the book’s poetic structuring, Taylor rejects the need for a streamlined solution, instead inviting the listener to take a different path through her crucial research―one that is unruly, nonlinear, and celebratory of the richer, fuller narratives allowed for by Black feminisms.

I loved this book, it’s heartbreaking in the best possible sense. I wanted to go back to the beginning and listen to it all over again it’s so rich.

Beautiful

I have learnt much about Foluke’s experiences, that have offered themselves as pebbles on the winding path that every (carrier, holder, therapist and man)soldering walks, runs and strolls along, when realising that dead white theories( particularly in the therapeutic encounter) do not consider you. She acknowledges that the numerous attempts to annihilate the black psyche under the auspices of racism are real. She cites African/black/woman, therapist, poet’s, singers healers and models. The index is fruitful for anyone seriously interested in peeling back the impact of racism. I have suggested to a School that every member of the staff team should read this book if they are to make any headway in addressing the hideous environment that breeds racism. Foluke Taylor’s sharing will be one of the pillars I use to support the healing journeys with clients and myself.
Much gratitude for your sharing Foluke.

My thirst is satisfied and I am alivened.

heartfelt without being sentimental, biting without being resentful. 'quietly impassioned' is how i would describe it, and beautifully read by the author. it reveals a perspective that I, an Indian man, would never have otherwise been able to connect with so intimately. so glad it was recommended to me and recommend it highly in turn.

Honest, revealing, beautiful
