University student Anna Winslow has gone missing. The circumstances of her disappearance are far from ordinary, a fact that only fellow student Melissa Lopez appears to appreciate. She quickly discovers that Anna was a loner with hearing difficulties and had disappeared for a week earlier in the year, only to return with perfect hearing, but with increasingly unstable behavior.

Hooks you in, then lets you down

This story begins with quite an interesting premise, and really makes you think it's a school project. It hooked me in with enough to keep me listening through until the end, where honestly, I wish I would have just stopped...

There's three reasons I would suggest you don't listen to this title.

The first one being that every time the main character seems to have hit a wall, there's exactly ONE thing that pops up to progress the story. I feel like she never had to make a choice, every step was just in front of her.

There is also an entire episode with just a series of voicemails, back to back, with an incredibly annoying "BEEP" between each message. Some of them have content, but by the end I just wanted to throw my phone out the window of my car.

Finally, each episode starts with a few minutes recap of the previous episode. This would make a lot of sense if it were released as a weekly show, but it's not, it's been released all in one go. For those of us who listen to a lot of audio books, it's much easier to just play the last 30 seconds of the previous episode if you can't remember where you left off.

All up, this story is poor. You can see the "climactic" ending a mile away.

However, if you do decide to listen, save yourself and skip the episode with the voicemails.

Move along... Nothing to see here

What would have made Unheard: The Story of Anna Winslow better?

Just poor. It's like listening to some poor student's attempt at a docu-drama that completely misses any targets...

What will your next listen be?

West Cork. Again

What didn’t you like about the narrator’s performance?

Irritating.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

None!

Any additional comments?

N/a

Waste of time

I'm sorry to be negative but this is just poor. I left it and came back to give it another chance but couldn't listen to it even to while away a long car journey. Irritating and improbable.

Mostly very compelling but the ending is a letdown

Would you try another book written by the authors or narrated by the narrator?

Yes, I would - I couldn't fault the performances (though it was a bit distracting, and ultimately pointless, to have the protagonist be American when everyone else is British) and the writing, for the most part, provides a compelling mystery in an interesting epistolary format.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending spoiled the whole thing for me. First, the events in the final episode leading up to the ending felt anticlimactic. Second, a lot of the questions raised in the story are never given proper answers. Third, partly because of the second point, I didn't really understand some elements of the ending and how it equated with what had already been established - much better explanation was needed.

Was Unheard: The Story of Anna Winslow worth the listening time?

I enjoyed the first seven episodes a lot, both the mystery and the tension that built up. But Episode 8, by failing to give a satisfactory conclusion, made me question if it had been worthwhile.

Creepy and intriguing

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this to a friend - in fact I already have!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Anna, although we very rarely 'meet' her character. Although she is a main character, we only learn about her through other people. Her fellow students, her professors, parents, doctors etc. No one REALLY knows Anna, and neither do we. Some may find this infuriating, but I found it intriguing.

What about the narrator’s performance did you like?

Due to the Podcast premise, I found this more like a radio play, rather than an audiobook. The voice actors all did a great job - all had distinctive voices, so I always knew which character was speaking. All were believable, and helped immerse me in the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I binge listened this! I hate earphones, and I even suffered them to listen to this on the bus.

Any additional comments?

A truly immersive experience! Some of the sound effects had me questioning my own sanity. Well worth a listen.

Suspense, drama, creepy, awesome

This was amazing - the story lends itself to an audio presentation and I assume was written specifically for this medium but it would also make an awesome film.
Reminded me of Adam Nevill books & M. Night Shayamalan.
More please.

How Stupid.

In every situation, every Dr who said they couldn't talk to Melissa for confidential reasons, did. Getting a job at Timmons? How convenient. If she gave the recording to the police, why would she invite known killers into her studio by herself? Still no reason why SHE started hearing voices. Totally disjointed, lots of plot holes, and all the the voices of the Drs. are so similar that it was hard to know whom was talking, especially at the end. Stupid. It's Blair Witch meets idiotic Journalism meets Theranos. I might've liked this if the ending was better. Also, the explanation of Anna's ears cut off before she committed suicide is ridiculous. If she became as smart as she did after the "procedure", she'd know that it was a chip in her brain and not the outer ear was the cause of the voices. Listen if you want to be hooked on the first 7 episodes, but that last one was just plain stupidity.

Poor performance, unbelievable story

I found this podcast while searching for True Crime stories. The intro reads like a True Crime story and real podcast. It clearly is not. Even once I realized it was a work of fiction, it didn't get any better. The acting was horrible and the story far from believable. It was free and still not worth it. At least I only wasted my time and not my money.

Gripping

Surprised me at how enthralled I was by Unheard. I picked it up as a Free Audible Book/Series & have been sitting on it for months! (I have been busy with Michael J Sulivan which for fantasy lovers is a must must must 17 & counting books/works all in one Original brilliant setting.... end random plug) I was not disappointed and will be looking into more like this series; between the various narrating voices and the long rabbit hole of events it pulled me through, start to end, over the course of my work day.

Highly Recommended.

Unbelievable

The narration was okay. Some of the audio was difficult to understand- simulations of recordings, emotional outbursts where the words get slurred. The story itself was unbelievable- not at all realistic. The main character has guts but was something of an airhead.

Decent... a little different to listen to, but...

it was different to listen in this format, but not bad. The ending was a tad vague only truly tying up the bigger picture and not all the loose ends. Ah well... easy entertainment. easy listen. doesn't take a whole lot of concentration to keep story line together.
