Summary
Die Zentralgestalt des Stückes, der "kluge, gebildete" Gutsbesitzer Nikolaj Ivanovic Sarynzew will sein und seiner Familie Leben nach dem in der Bergpredigt überlieferten Willen Christi einrichten und allen Besitz an die notleidenden Bauern verschenken. Seine Auffassung von tätiger Nächstenliebe stößt jedoch auf den hartnäckigen Widerstand seiner Frau, die ihm vorwirft, er wolle seine Kinder zu Bettlern machen. Am Ende steht nicht ein moralischer Triumph, sondern eine äußere und innere Niederlage. "Und das Licht scheint in der Finsternis, und die Finsternis hat's nicht begriffen" (Johannes,1,5).
