L'eufemismo della rimozione è soltanto un esempio delle ambiguità generate dai toni cerimoniosi e pacati di Ono, narratore delle vicende di questo romanzo. Si rende conto il già famoso pittore del marchio d'infamia che grava sul suo passato, o l'ha rimosso, come il mondo dell'arte ha rimosso le sue tele gonfie di retorica? Non è dato al lettore di saperlo con certezza, nemmeno quando Ono dichiara pubblicamente il suo pentimento. L'estrema bravura di Ishiguro sta proprio nell'invenzione di una voce che blandisce e ipotizza.
