This is one of the best novels written about a North Wales community in the early 1900s. There is a balance in this novel between the humorous tales of boyhood pranks and the darker elements that deal with madness, abuse and death. The book is read superbly by the narrators.

A wonderful book! As a Welsh learner, I read it —and listened to this recording—alongside the English translation and it was a great experience! I loved the oral narrative from North Wales (even though I lived for forty years in South Wales)! This semi-autobiographical novel of a childhood in Bethesda around the time of the First World War has many dark elements, but also some very funny chapters and some really sublime moments. The ending, however, was quite unexpected and will take me a while to process. The narrators were superb!
