About this listen

'A great read; I'm so pleased it exists in the world.’ Chris van Tulleken

Unpacking the truth about what’s on your plate – and what it’s doing to your health

Everyone is talking about ultra-processed food (UPF) and its impact on our health – but what about women? Is this very modern way of eating having a unique and specific impact on the female body? Are these ‘industrially produced food-like items in plastic packets’ that many of us consume particularly damaging to women’s health?

In Ultra-Processed Women, acclaimed journalist and women’s health advocate Milli Hill uncovers the shocking truth. From period pain and weight gain to depression, hormone imbalances, autoimmune conditions and even Alzheimer’s, Hill reveals cutting-edge research into the hidden dangers that lurk in your daily food choices.

But this is not just a book about food. Ultra-Processed Women also explores the way the modern food industry has exploited women in their advertising for decades and uncovers the damage being wrought not only on our bodies but on the environment and on our own ability to connect with each other through the fundamentally human experience of cooking and eating.

This isn’t just a wake-up call – it’s a battle cry. Written in Hill’s trademark down-to-earth style, Ultra-Processed Women will help you understand the issues and develop a clear course of action, arming you with tools and practical steps to cut through the confusion, break free from the damaging effects of UPFs, and reclaim your health without guilt or deprivation. Changing the way we eat, Hill argues, is a radical act of resistance to an ultra-processed world.

It’s time to take back control. Your body, your choices, your future.

I found this so informative, thought provoking and balanced. It’s initiated change in my habits and thought processes. Whilst really informative for women, I think men should listen/read it too!

Eye opening and not just for women!

I am quite conversant in the subject of UPF, but wanted to be able to suggest something to a colleague to listen to as 1. a woman, and 2. a newbie to UPF understanding.
This book ticked both those requirements, and I will recommend and listen or this time and time again.
Thank you!

Easy to digest

I was practically raised on UPF. I was brought up by a single mother who worked permanent nights and was often too tired to cook anything other than quick meals, either food from the freezer or sauces from a jar. As a teenager, I often felt unsatisfied with the food I was given, or wanted something as a comfort, and sought out more which led to me being rather overweight by the time I became an adult. I felt like I piled weight on, even though I felt the volume of food I was eating wasn't that much. This book has been such an eye opener for me to change my ways and reform my relationship with food. It explains why I made the choices I did with UPF and how it's been designed to be more-ish, and goes into good detail about how it affects women in particular. I found it an engaging listen from start to finish, and will certainly be taking its advice on board.

Extremely informative in an easy to understand way. Also very practical and, quite refreshingly non-guilt inducing. I’ve been shocked to see the ingredients in the foods I’ve been serving my family. Thank you for opening our eyes Milli Hill.
