Summary
When war comes to the Worldship, all bets are off.
Udo is chosen to be named count. The title comes with the wealth and privilege he's always wanted, but he has a nagging feeling it will be more trouble than it's worth.
Things become complicated as Hanman, counselor to Ditmar the King, coerces Udo into informing against Gerold of the Four Fires, Ditmar's chief general in the war with Walhaz. Udo resolves to play this part to the best of his ability but is soon horrified when that same general convinces Udo into informing against Hanman. Even worse, both of these men seem openly aware of the other's scheming and each seems pleased to play Udo against the other, with the newly elevated count ill-equipped to handle all the intrigue.
A surprise assassination carried out in the Ditmar's very own fortress causes the king to act fast. The army launches with all haste for Walhaz, including Udo, the giant Riese, Gerold, Hanman, and thousands of other soldiers and nobles. Landing in enemy country, Udo must now navigate a war he does not understand along with all of the earlier troubles, and in the meantime, he remembers the commandment from the goddess Ing: He must look after his brother Riese even though Riese seems to have very little interest in being looked after.

Udo the god?
Brilliantly written, hats off to Joshua Gayou, I wasn't sure about the change in the narrators as RC Bray is one of the best in the industry but Michael Kramer came through and I was transported into Udo's world. If you enjoyed the 1st book you will really enjoy this. highly recommend it.

Amazing story so far, good characters interesting
good Narrator and Interesting growing story. I look forward to seeing the next stage of the book. amazing ending so happy. good culture on other natives.

The difficult second album
Slower than the first... Got bogged down in parts and was, frankly, a bit boring..I loved the first book. The second was.... The difficult second album. Unsure why as Gayou's commune series was fantastic all the way through. Pity they changed narrator as.. RC Bray was great. Michael Kramer is.. A bit too ponderous for Udo..

Excellent second act - We now need a good ending
Firstly the performance. I was a little disappointed when I noticed that RC Bray had been replaced, but Michael Kramer's performance was excellent - truly first class. A definite rival to RC Bray for Audio book narration and someone I will be looking out for in the future.
The story so far seems to be the telling of how an everyman is set to become some sort of religious icon but there is a massive twist being hinted at. If this type of story doesn't normally appeal, don't let this put you off. it's a thoroughly compelling story told in thoroughly compelling way.
I love Josh Gayou's writing. It triggers your imagination and puts you right in the middle of the action without every little inconsequential detail having to be written down (unlike some other authors). It's a real skill and one that JG has refined in his last few books. This is a fairly long book series (compared to others) and normally I would be begging the story to 'Get on with it' But not with JG. Too damn good.
This book is clearly the middle act in a 3 act story. Don't expect an ending here. It's a massive set up for what I hope is a compelling ending in book 3. And you must read book 1 first otherwise this one will not make any sense. In fact the only reason I have not given this one 5 stars is because it is only the middle act. 5 stars are reserved for those books with a satisfying ending
So a cracking good listen - very funny in places - can't wait for the next book.

Great,but without Bray it is flawed.
Story was fantastic but without Brays narration it wasn't upto the standard of Udo The Digger.

Get some!
hard to start without Bray but well worth the perseverance.
full credit to narrator who had a most unenviable task.

An unbearable change of Narrator
Like pretty much everyone else I love R C Bray and Michael Kramer. But the switch between the two is jarring, the difference in intonation and charisma is so stark that it has completely ruined the second instalment of this series for me. Udo is barely recognisable and the writing just feels so different from the first book. I think I’ve racked up five hours trying to get past this issue but I just can’t shake it.
