About this listen

It was an outlawed book, a text so dangerous “it could only be countered by the most vicious burnings, of books and men and women.” But what book could incite such violence and bloodshed? The year is 1526. It is the age of Henry VIII and his tragic Anne Boleyn, of Martin Luther and Thomas More. The times are treacherous. The Catholic Church controls almost every aspect of English life, including access to the very Word of God. And the church will do anything to keep it that way.

Enter William Tyndale, the gifted, courageous “heretic” who dared translate the Word of God into English. He worked in secret, in exile, in peril, always on the move. Neither England nor the English language would ever be the same again.

With thoughtful clarity and a reverence that comes through in every word, David Teems shares a story of intrigue and atrocity, betrayal and perseverance. This is how the Reformation officially reached English shores—and what it cost the men who brought it there.

Praise for David Teems’ previous work Majestie

“Teems . . . pulls together the story of this enigmatic king [ James] with humor and pathos . . . [A] delightful read in every way.” —PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

William Tyndale is The Ethiopian Bible wrapped in a white spacesuit who landed in the UK.

If Catholic schools didn't hide him from us the UK and the world would be a better place!

Moreover I would not have swapped their religion for Spiritually!

I always knew something wasn't right!
Control and Wickedness is their game!

As a black man born in the UK, Mr Tyndale is up there with the very best and I definitely feel his pain!

I will be telling all my family and friends about him and his books... An amazing human being!

Amazing Story!

This is a wonderful book, so beautifully written and so clearly and warmly read! The story of how Tyndale strived all his life to produce an English language Bible is inspiring. The final result, his magnificent New Testament, echoes through the ages, contained in the KJV Bible’ NY -80% of which is Tyndale. He gifted us the modern English language and had an impact on our daily speech as strong as Shakespeare. Hear more about him in this fabulous book- one of the best I’ve listened to.

What an amazing man Tyndall was!

This is a superb work. It contrasts the humanity of William Tyndale and his brutal adversary, Thomas More, now a saint in the Catholic Church. The research into this work is exhaustive and paints the picture of a kindly man in Tyndale, preaching the true teachings of Christ contrasted with Thomas More, a man who delighted in burning “heretics” and other hideous acts of cruelty. How Pius XI could canonise this man and the Catholic Church continue to celebrate him is beyond belief. William Tyndale, on the other hand, deserves to be celebrated for his attempts to enable every English person to be able to read the Bible in their own language and thereby “hear”:Christ’s words for themselves. I recommend this book to people of all persuasions. Wonderful, and the superb narration by Simon Vance adds so much to the experience.

A truly worthy account of the life of a truly great man
