About this listen

Developmental delays and signs of autism usually show up before 18 months of age, yet children are often not diagnosed until they are 4 or 5 years old. In Turn Autism Around, Dr. Mary Barbera explains why parents can't afford to worry and wait in long lines for evaluations and treatment while not knowing how to help their children. She empowers parents, caregivers, and early intervention professionals to regain hope and take back control with simple strategies to dramatically improve outcomes for their children.Dr. Barbera has created a new approach to teaching kids with developmental delays that uses the science of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) married with a positive, child-friendly methodology that any parent can use--whether or not their child has delays--to learn to teach communication skills, socialization strategies, as well as tackle sleep, eating, potty training, and behavior challenges in a positive, effective, and lasting way.Turn Autism Around is the first book of its kind that calls attention to an important fact: parents can make a tremendous impact on their child's development through behavioral practices taught at home, even in as little as 15 minutes a day. Her program shows these autism and developmental delays can be remediated, and in some cases, delays can be caught up altogether, if parents intervene while the child is young. This book is for parents of young children aged one-to-five years who are passionate about helping their child as well as learning how they can change the trajectory of their child's and family's life. This audio product contains a PDF with supporting material, and the PDF is available to download Children's Health Infants & Toddlers Mental Health Parenting & Families Psychology Psychology & Mental Health Relationships Health Autism Special need Infant Autism Parenting

This book has a lot of good advice and is well structured. It is much cheaper than the online course which is similar in content. It is easy to listen. I find however that the practical aspect is quite short compared to the introductory explanation of the exercises. But with the help of Dr Barbera's podcast, online searching and YouTube tutorials I am able to follow the programme easily for my 2-year old. The other negative in my opinion is that the author promotes video and tablets rewards for reinforcement, but recent scientific research (2018 onwards) has proven that too much screen time such as TV tablets or phones for under 4s can actually increase autism symptoms, and the best approach to improve the child's condition is to remove all screens altogether and increase one-on-one learning time. Dr Barbera gives overall great ideas for one-on-one learning time, but I disagree with the screen rewards. You can google Virtual Autism to read about how screen time changes toddlers' behaviour and stunts babies' brain development. Overall this book is well structured and has a good informative content. It is very useful for toddlers with language delay in particular (whether on the spectrum or not).

Informative and easy to listen overall

I truly had no clue how to help my son. This book has shown me that I don’t need to wait I can start helping him now, that in itself is an ease. This book should be widely promoted.

Great help

It's rare I would get emotional like this over a book but as a dad autism has been the hardest journey I have ever encountered and encounter my son is 3 and at the beginning of this I felt completely lost. TAA is has provided me with a deeper understanding, a plan, confidence, knowledge and strategies to help my little boy, who I have a wonderful happy understanding that we share.

Gave me and my son a new life together

This book is amazing with real practical advice for any parent of an autistic child.
Absolute must read.

The author is a parent of an autistic child and is now a BCBA-D - which means she is a qualified ABA pratitioner.
I did not know what ABA was and I wish I read this book ages ago.

So well written and filled me with positivity on the future with the outcome of our child.

After reading many books - this is the one I love
