About this listen

You think you know someone...
Would you bet your life on it?

A detective came to her home, drugged her and kidnapped her. She tries to make sense of it, but only one conclusion is possible: it's the past, come to claim her.

His new life seemed perfect - right up until the moment a missed call shatters everything. Ex-journalist Martin Scarsden checks his voicemail, and all he hears is his partner Mandy's terrified scream before the phone cuts off.

Racing home, he finds an unconscious man sprawled on the floor and Mandy gone. Someone has abducted her. But who, and why?

So starts a riveting tale of intrigue and danger, as Martin probes the hidden past of the woman he loves. But can he trust her, once her shocking secrets are finally revealed? Even if it means putting everything on the line...

Wow what a story! Beautifully performed and a complex tale to follow with twists and turns, sub plots and deceptions. The journalist / detective Martin Scarsden is following his interests alongside the police and his current girlfriend. Their differing interests and involvement are explored and finally the whole mosaic is pieced together but tension runs high in the hunt for truth.

Concentration rewarded - listened twice!

This is a third novel in the Martin&Mandy series this time set in the somewhat depressing Sydney and focused on the ghosts from Mandy’s past city life. It’s mostly about the corrupt establishment and their links with the police and press. As usual in Hammer’s novels there are numerous shady characters, tangled story lines which only get explained in the end. This book is less about Martin who seems to be a victim of circumstances and the plots of other people, is not as strongly portrayed or interesting as in Scrublands or Silver. Mandy is also a bit superficial although the story is spun fundamentally based on people and events from her past. A good read but lacked slightly the suspense and dynamics of the previous novels. The fact that the narrators change in every novel isn’t great, Rupert Degas ( Scrublands) was by far the best.

A gripping story set in Sydney

Shame about the narrator. For me this narrator is terrible to listen to, way too much of a ‘performance’ rather than a story being told. I have to listen speeded up too as it’s just too painful on normal speed, I will read the physical book for the next one if it’s the same narrator. Chris Hammer is a master of twists and turns and I thoroughly enjoy the story and feel I’m right behind Martin Scarsden, there was always going to be a back story with Mandy to come out.

Great story but….
