Enter Chaythe Asylum: a long-shuttered and controversial institution where patients were allegedly subjected to unethical experiments. Stephen deems the old building, closed in 1989 after a series of grisly murders, as good a place as any to explore the possibility of the supernatural, and arranges to take a tour with his students. Summary
A voice from beyond the grave?
College students Kenji and Dylan stumble upon a strange recording in the background of an obscure song. It's a woman's voice uttering a string of seemingly random characters. Upon further inspection, the song appears to have been embedded with a hidden message. Attempting to crack the mysterious code and becoming obsessed with the recording, Kenji and Dylan set off in search of answers. With every turn in the road however, the puzzle only seems to grow more complicated. And sinister.
Retired Vietnam vet Reggie Cash is also drawn in by this message, and before long both he and the two college students are on the trail of the mysterious woman featured in the recording. But who is she, and where is she leading them?
As things fall into place and strange events unfold, the three of them begin to wish that they'd never heard the recording at all.
Transmission is a full-length novel of supernatural horror and suspense by Ambrose Ibsen.

Spine-chillingly good
I had to go on a lengthy road trip and thought listening to this in the car would keep me entertained. It did, but next time I drive along dark, isolated country roads on my own for hours on end I might have to pick something less creepy. I had no idea how much this supernatural thriller was going to freak me out. This was my third book by Ambrose Ibsen and definitely my favorite so far. I've listened to several stories narrated by Jake Urry now and I have always commented on how well he does with suspenseful, scary stories. He took it to yet another level with this one!
Transmission is the story of three men, a Vietnam vet and two College guys, who become intrigued by a woman's voice on a recording repeating a seemingly random combination of characters, like a code. They decide to do some research to establish the identity of the woman and as they do, they become increasingly obsessed with the mystery surrounding her and the code.
This is a great book if you enjoy spine-chilling mysteries with supernatural elements. There is nothing gory or explicit, but the author is extremely successful at creating a menacing, dark atmosphere. The narration is first-class, utterly brilliant, but don't listen when you're alone in the dark.

Mediocre to stupid
I just can't bring myself to give this book 3 stars. I didn't want to be too mean in my rating, but really by the end I just couldn't give it 3 stars. Lots of 2nd hand ideas taken from eg. Close encounters of the 3rd kind, The Stone Tapes, Etc, Etc. Author kept writing how afraid the protagonists were "hairs standing up on their necks" Etc - but he never vividly described a scary seen. The reader couldn't therefor put himself in the picture & be afraid; because the scariness was not conveyed by the written word to the reader. Narrator kept running 1 paragraph straight on from another, so that poignant pauses were lost & 1 point made was just left to run in to an entirely disparate point/ subject. Whole thing very amateurish.

"Normal. Everything was perfectly normal!"
What made the experience of listening to Transmission the most enjoyable?
Arguably, Jake Urry is the most sinister of narration voices in audio today. He could cause cold shivers by simply reading a telephone directory. And yet he is also a master of creating distinct, realistic character voices in conversation. A perfect pairing, therefore, with this story of supernatural happenings.
This is a chiller, not a thriller. No crazy action packed happenings on every page. Just the insidious creeping fear of something very wrong, of having made wrong choices, of being watched, of wanting to be anywhere but there ... Always moving towards an inevitable end.
It creeps up on you - and won't let go. Good rounded characters, two college students and an older man, all pleasant, likeable, and all caught up in more than they can control. It makes the listener want to shout, 'Get out now whilst you still might have a chance'
My heartfelt thanks for the gift of this book. It filled an otherwise tedious day with tingles down my spine. Even if I have now vowed never again to listen to those strange voices in the background of some musical recordings ...

communing with the dead?
Would you listen to Transmission again? Why?
for sure! I would just make sure my TV is unplugged and that it wasn't in the dead of night!
What did you like best about this story?
you can feel the tension in the tale grow as you get deeper into the story and right up to the end you're not absolutely sure what the outcome is going to be
What does Jake Urry bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
i think Jake is our generations Vincent price! as soon as you hear him start to speak you know something untoward is going to happen and it's probably not going to end well
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
yes , it's not too long and could easily be listened to in one sitting it's a real "page turner" as well so make sure you have a clear afternoon!

What’s in my transmission?
I’m still not sure what I feel about this book.
The story felt like it should have been much longer than it was, lots of ideas and bits that we’re told about in the book were only briefly talked about and we’re moved on to the next section of the storyline.
I’m not into paranormal stuff, so my brain is unable to fill in the blanks that I feel the author was letting me do with the storyline. It’s a shame because I really wanted to enjoy it, the entire thing was really interesting to see where it ends up… unfortunately, the ending was clear a head of time.
That didn’t take away from the story, and although it didn’t have me on the edge of my seat, it held my concentration well and I didn’t even mind the lack of character development.
I think it would have done far better if there was more things to solve, I think I spent half the book waiting to see what else could be hidden, but alas it never happened. The radio part really perked my interest, but then let me down a little.
The narration was ok, the slow pace with the smooth gruff voice really helped the book to flow.
Overall, if paranormal stuff really ticks your box, then for a six-hour audio book, it’s not that bad. You’ll probably be wishing for more by the end of it. Is that good or bad? I’m not quite sure with this book.

Don't go into the house alone!
What did you love best about Transmission?
The performance! Jake Urry is without a doubt the best fantasy/horror performer out there. He is scintillating in this reading ( and paired with a decent genre writer in Ambrose Ibsen as well! )
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Most: The recordings and how they were parsed out.
Least: Some of the personal interactions in the story are fluffy.
What about Jake Urry’s performance did you like?
Everything. Couldn't be improved upon. Fabulous work.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Some parts were scary and made me think. No crying however.
Any additional comments?
I was provided this book in exchange for fair and objective review. I am VERY glad I did get the book, as it is was highly entertaining, and I most definitely would have used a credit for it if it didn't end up on my Audioblast list.

Creepy and intriguing -- sure to keep you hooked!
I love that this story wastes no time and gets right down to business. Kenji hears a weird voice in the background of his music and immediately begins puzzling over it. Dragging his friend Dylan into it, they set off on a quest to discover the meaning. Elsewhere, a man sees a woman on a VHS uttering the same phrases into the camera and is sucked into the hunt as well.
The story follows our three protagonists as they endeavor to discover how and why this woman, Agnes, imprinted her message on various media 10 years ago. It's a fun and creepy romp that kept my attention just about the whole way.
Toward the 65-70% mark however, the author apparently realizes the cat is just about to be out the bag and seems intent on dragging things out as much as possible. The listener is forced to suffer through repetitive dialog and inner-monologues over how they shouldn't be doing what they're doing and how they'll regret it. Every step of the adventure is then plagued with enough hand-wringing to completely destroy the momentum.
The ending is satisfactory, although I think things might have been creepier had the woman's true nature not been what it was. There also seemed to be no real reason for some characters or facts to have existed at all.
The narrator has an appropriately creepy voice that's well-suited to a tale of this nature. The accent, while soothing, could become a bit distracting however. I'd say the biggest drawback for me was that most of the dialog was read in a monotone. Coupling that with the accent, it sometimes made it hard to tell if you were listening to someone speak or think.
Definitely worth a listen for the first 70% of the book alone though!

A Different Kind of Ghost Story
Any additional comments?
I have read/listened to many ghost stories in my time (they are some of my favorite kinds of stories!) and this one sure is different. From start to finish, Ibsen puts a unique spin on your average ghost story by having a totally new trajectory. I can't say more without spoilers! If you enjoy spooky tales and are ready for something a bit different, this book is for you. I also can't help but mention that Ibsen does a fantastic job of having diverse characters in this book- thank you for that Mr. Ibsen. Jake Urry delivers flawless voice narration, as always.

Curiosity Killed the Cat
Would you try another book from Ambrose Ibsen and/or Jake Urry?
This is the second book I've had by Ambrose Ibsen, I read his House by The Sea a couple weeks previous to this one and really liked his writing style. Ambrose Ibsen writes creepy, something unworldly is out to get you kind of stories,
Would you recommend Transmission to your friends? Why or why not?
Transmission wasn't as good as House by the Sea but if you are an Ambrose Ibsen fan, put this on your list. Parts of the story I found rather unbelievable and the main characters kind of get what they deserve for being so freaking nosey.
Any additional comments?
Not Ibsen's best work but it was creepy enough and there were a couple of scenes in the second half of the book that kept me up at night.

Loved It!
Ibsen writes entertaining horror for a modern audience. Thoroughly loved the blending of classic horror with a dash of eldrich horror and a pinch of creeping dread!

Great horror story!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, this was a great and clever story! I was so disappointed when it was over because I wanted more.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I think my favorite character was Reggie - he had humor
What does Jake Urry bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
character! It's so much nicer to hear these narrators create these characters - so much more interesting.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Probably not. Like alot of other books I read, it takes time for this story to get off the ground, but once it does, you won't be disappointed - a great horror story!! This one would make a great movie!
Any additional comments?
I'd love to see this book made into a movie.

Creepy Thriller
I love anything with spirits/ghosts. This book is no exception. Author is great with the supernatural as read several of his books and recommend them especially the Ulrich Files. Got upset with Reggie at the surprise end and wonder if there is going to be a book 2 with Kenji and Dylan. As always I enjoy listening to the narrator makes things creepy! I was provided this free review copy audiobook by the narrator. THANK YOU!!!

Loved it
I think this is severely underrated
With no gore or fancy monsters this has creepiness on par with the ring
Narration was excellent and really enhanced the story
Highly recommended to all horror fans
I received a free review audiobook and voluntarily left this review
