About this listen

The mystery of a missing translator sets three lives on a collision course that will have a ripple effect across the stars in this powerful novel by award-winning author Ann Leckie.

Qven was created to be a Presger translator. The pride of their Clade, they always had a clear path before them: learn human ways, and eventually, make a match and serve as an intermediary between the dangerous alien Presger and the human worlds. The realization that they might want something else isn't "optimal behavior", is the type of behavior that results in elimination.

But Qven rebels. And in doing so, their path collides with those of two others. Enae, a reluctant diplomat whose dead grandmama has left her an impossible task as an inheritance: hunting down a fugitive who has been missing for over 200 years. And Reet, an adopted mechanic who is increasingly desperate to learn about his genetic roots - or anything that might explain why he operates so differently from those around him.

As a Conclave of the various species approaches - and the long-standing treaty between the humans and the Presger is on the line - the decisions of all three will have ripple effects across the stars.

Masterfully merging space adventure and mystery, and a poignant exploration about relationships and belonging, Translation State is a triumphant new standalone story set in Leckie's celebrated Imperial Radch universe.

Another fantastic listen from Ann Leckie. And, yet again, great narration from Adjoa Andoh. She handles all the complexities of language in Leckie's alien worlds with ease and finds wonderfully consistent and distinct voices for the characters. There are many great ideas in the book but Leckie and Andoh are well teamed to bring out the emotion.

Fantastic!

I read the Ancillary trilogy and loved it, was sad when it came to an end. This is a wonderful new story in the same universe, with different characters but some overlap and deepening understanding of characters we've met before. I really loved it.

The narrator is again wonderful, using different accents to differentiate the races and characters but they're mostly British regional accent's which is such a pleasure for me as a Brit!

I've just dropped a star from story because part of the plot is sort of about assault and consent, I just generally don't like books about this anymore , having been through a crime drama phase I really haf enough of it, I feel like we've had so many stories about sexual violence now and I don't really enjoy reading about this subject matter for entertainment. While technically it wasn't sex and it wasn't a female victim, the narrator's choice of voice for that character made them sound female or at least small and vulnerable. I'm also slightly confused by the respective ages of the two main characters and how ethical some aspects of the story are. I just wish that thr story had maybe just not used some of these plots or at least discussed the issue if it was really necessary to do so. Also, a small thing but the repeating chapter names make it really difficult to navigate, especially if you listen till you fall asleep like me.

Wonderful story, really enjoyed

Not as good as the reviews suggest. Maybe would have been good to read rather than listen!

Good, but, over hyped

Adjoa Andoh should narrate all audiobooks! Amazing all the way from Ancillary 1-3 through Provenance and Translation State.

5 star narration

The narration ruined the experience. The story is set thousands of years in the future with aliens and humans who might as well be aliens etc, yet the narrator assigns Welsh, Jamaican and African (Nigerian?) accents to the various characters and one of the main characters is a Dame Judy Dench impersonation, with what sounds a lot like a list on certain words!
I mean just because you can do certain accents, it doesn’t mean you should use them in a science fiction story! Completely out of place and off putting! I tried to return it at around chapter 6, but couldn’t because I’d bought it with money, rather than a credit and apparently you can’t return those! So had to struggle thru to the end and like I said, the story was interesting enough.

The story was interesting and unusual, in a good way.
