About this listen

Shortlisted for the Contemporary Romantic Novel Award 2018 with the Romantic Novelists' Association

A poignant, surprising love story told backwards over five decades, with a devastating secret at its heart.

Robbie and Emily they have been together for decades. Now, their joints are creaking and their eyesight is failing - but their love for each other is as fresh and fierce as the day they first met. They have had children and grandchildren, lived full and happy and intimate lives.

But they have been keeping a secret since the day they met, when their lives changed forever. Over the years, the sacrifices and choices they made have sealed their fates together.

Did they do the right thing? Read their story, and you decide.

Perfect for fans of Ruth Hogan, Gail Honeyman and Sarah Winman and anyone looking for a thought-provoking listen.

this is so good and artfully written it prompted me to go straight back to the start and listen to it again!

this book is written in a way that is like watching someone else put a puzzle together or doing a card trick, with the end of the book showing the full picture leaving you wanting to do it yourself - I had to go back and knowing the finished picture, work out how the pieces go together.

EXCELLENT :+)

I went straight back and listened to it again!

Was hooked from the beginning

I'm not really a fiction girl but serendipity had me listening to this story. The recording is, for me, perfect. Sometimes I feel the reading interferes with the flow and feel of the writing but this read by Gemma Wheelan was enhanced. She has an amazing breadth of accents, depth and tone.
As someone just entertaining the writing of a novel the mind-bending achievement of a story told backwards is only just becoming apparent. In addition to do it as if that is how stories are always told is no small feat. Loved the twists, moral dilemmas and drama. Looking forward to seeing the film and moaning about how the book is better and also looking forward to going sailing again soon.

Beautiful reading of a great story.

I really liked it. I kept asking myself the question: what happened? Now I know the beginning, I may start again at the end. I also really liked Gemma Whelan’s voice

Interesting way a story unfolds
