About this listen

A bloodthirsty immortal leads his dark army against the Godborn and his band of allies.

A corrupt god demands blood sacrifice from his people, and the young warrior Herkuhlos journeys to the west to save them. But a far greater danger lurks amongst the stone circles of this strange new land that will take more than his immortal strength to overcome.

On the wild shores of the cold northern sea, Sif is a young huntress and healer. Both spirit walkers of her tribe have mysteriously vanished, and only Sif can find them. But there is a traitor amongst her people who will do anything to stop her from uncovering the truth.

Torkos the Devourer is finally free from his long captivity, and now he is hunting the beautiful goddess of the Seal People to claim her as his own. But a son of the Usurper has tracked him from the east. If he is to win the ancient war against the gods, he must first destroy the Godborn.

Only one figure from legend can unite the clans and defeat the evil that is devouring this land. First he was the Godborn. Now, Herkuhlos must become the Thunderer.

I have enjoyed both these book in themselves but was a little disappointed in the fantasy figures of the gods/jotnar. I understand stand the author was attempting to produce an origin story for the various proto Indo-European myths found around the world and I’m guessing the story is set about 4,000bc but instead of the story being told as it was at the time it is kind of told much later as it’s become more exaggerated and fantastical.
I liked the idea that the jotnar/gods were the mammoth hunters maybe they could instead of being magical beings, have been the last remaining Neanderthals and the hero being a first generation cross?
But still extremely good story telling and love that Hercules club was in fact a bronze weapon based a real archaeological find.

Obviously Dan Davies knows his Bronze Age prehistory.
