All Lina wanted was to be desired. How did she end up in a marriage with two children and a husband who wouldn’t touch her?

All Maggie wanted was to be understood. How did she end up in a relationship with her teacher and then in court, a hated pariah in her small town?

All Sloane wanted was to be admired. How did she end up a sexual object of men, including her husband, who liked to watch her have sex with other men and women?

I couldn't put it down. It was really engaging and very nicely written even if a lot of people were annoyed that it did not meet their expectations of explaining all of female desire - all 3 characters are young white women, but the author does explain that these were the only 3 women left by the end of the decade of interviewing various women who consented to their stories being in the book so apparently it's not really her fault that there is not more diversity. If you do not expect it to explain the entire global female romantic experience then you will not be disappointed. It's definitely a little flowery in places although overall I think it's beautifully written.

Couldn't put it down, despite its flaws

Thoroughly enjoyed this book on Audible. I bought it a few weeks ago.
The narration was top notch.

Brilliant

I struggled to finish this book and don't get the hype about it at all. Some of the narration was fine but one narrator (reading Lena) wasn't great, she was very monotone and robotic. The stories of the women are not particularly interesting, nothing i haven't heard before. Overall just average for me.

Just OK

I finished this very quickly as it was extremely absorbing, so do recommend it. I wouldn't say I enjoyed it per se because it is so saddening and uncomfortable, but that's what it's supposed to be. If you're looking for something to escape a winter in lockdown I'd suggest listening to it in easier times - and if you have past traumas/mental health issues related to the themes in this book, approach with extreme caution and not if you're in a rocky period.

Obviously the fact that this book is so sobering speaks volumes about the issues women and other less societally priveliged people face so disproportionately, and that's an important conversation to keep having. I admire the author's dedication in putting these accounts together.

Absorbing but don't listen to cheer yourself up

loved the evocative descriptions of places and characters, and the vivid narratives. the voices seemed to match the characters which added extra emotion.

Gut wrenchingly moving
