Summary

The name on the covers was Bachman. But the imagination could only belong to one man: Stephen King.

'Thinner' - the old gypsy man barely whispers the word. Billy feels the touch of a withered hand on his cheek.

Billy Halleck, prosperous if overweight citizen, happily married, shuddered then turned angrily away. The old woman's death had been none of his fault. The courts had cleared him. She'd just stumbled in front of his car. Now he simply wanted to forget the whole messy business.

Later, when the scales told him he was losing weight, it was what the doctor ordered. His wife was pleased - as she should have been. But....

'Thinner' - the word, the old man's curse, has lodged in Billy's mind like a fattening worm, eating at his flesh, at his reason. And with his despair, comes violence.

Thoroughly satisfying yarn

This is a great listen. Excellent, threatening narration from Joe Mantegna and the unusual addition of unsettling music. Revenge is such a powerful and compelling theme in literature and interest in this novel is really driven by waiting for the results of the clash between the two main protagonists.

I enjoyed this novel much more than I anticipated and it is much better than 11.22.63 which has much better reviews.

Thinner or not

Where does Thinner rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book has to be in my top 5. Its my first Stephen King book .

What was one of the most memorable moments of Thinner?

The end it is so dramatic you just dont think it will end this way.

Which character – as performed by Joe Mantegna – was your favourite?

The main character .... you felt you were inside of him along his journey, which isnt an easy one.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Be careful how you drive

Any additional comments?

This book is haunting. it is so well narrated by Joe Mantegna.... his voice puts the story across so well. You think about the word thinner even when you have finished the book. The story line is different, but the way it has been narrated by Joe makes this a very enjoyable gripping book to listen to.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes - it made me laugh in some places. A bit sad at the end, but i did see that coming.

Another great 'read' by Stephen King

Another fantastic book by Stephen King. Ably narrated by Joe Mantegna. Some people have commented negatively on the use of music in the story. I thought it aided the atmosphere of menace that the author was looking for. Stephen remains one of my favourite audible listens.

BRILLIANT

Wow, I used to read SK as a teenager. Now nearly 50. What a rediscovery! Even though it’s long it’s compelling. Guess I have a lot of books to listen to now!

Thrilling

Exciting and nerve wracking despite being mostly psychological... no cheap scares or gore required! Great characters and plot.

A dark, suspenseful tale, with one downfall...

'Thinner' is a story of revenge, skilfully woven by master horror-author Stephen King. The narrator gives an excellent performance, bringing the characters to life with believable voices, and copes well with King's sometimes
(convoluted)
elaborate textual format.

The only sour taste in this otherwise appetising feast is the unnecessary inclusion of twanging guitar music, which heralds breaks in chapters and sometimes obscures the narrator's voice. It does nothing to enhance the story, instead hindering the pacing and mood.

I still recommend the book, but wish there was some way to cut out the music.

Properly creepy

A great Stephen King novel which has all the hallmarks - a credible scenario, lots of character development , a satisfying denouement: and all beautifully read with (a surprise, this one!) some genuinely effective creepy music...
