About this listen

Lie back and think of England....

England, 1904. Two years ago, Captain Archie Curtis lost his friends, fingers, and future to a terrible military accident. Alone, purposeless, and angry, Curtis is determined to discover if he and his comrades were the victims of fate, or of sabotage.

Curtis's search takes him to an isolated, ultra-modern country house, where he meets and instantly clashes with fellow guest Daniel da Silva. Effete, decadent, foreign, and all-too-obviously queer, the sophisticated poet is everything the straightforward British officer fears and distrusts.

As events unfold, Curtis realizes that Daniel has his own secret intentions. And there's something else they share - a mounting sexual tension that leaves Curtis reeling.

As the house party's elegant facade cracks to reveal treachery, blackmail, and murder, Curtis finds himself needing clever, dark-eyed Daniel as he has never needed a man before....

Warning: Contains explicit male/male encounters, ghastly historical attitudes, and some extremely stiff upper lips.

I love K J Charles but couldn't finish this audiobook as the narrator is so awful. Stilted, odd pronunciation, different volumes.

Awful narration

Two men out to stop blackmail and murder, one camp and modern, the other a damaged soldier of Victorian sentiments join forces. They find surprising depths in eachother and love blooms. HEA.

Surprisingly warm hearted meets Boys Own.

It's a toss up between this, Jackdaw and the Charm of Magpies series as to which is my fave KJ read, although books 2 & 3 of the Society of Gentleman series run them a pretty close second or fifth 😉. While I'm waiting for the Charm of Magpies series to come out on audio [with a suitably impressive narrator like...say Nicholas Boulton for example nudge, nudge], thought I'd give this one a listen.

Well, I'm glad I did BUT I was also a tad underwhelmed by Audible's choice of narrator I have to admit. I thought the mis-pronunciations were maybe down to Tom Carter being nervous, but I see that he's made several audios under different names, so that shouldn't have been a problem really. He also needs to work on his female voices and stop leaving uncomfortable pauses between characters. Maybe this was his first 'gay' romance, who knows?? Whatever the reason, he would definitely need to up his game before I listen to something else from him. 3.5 stars for the narration.

Story is amazing....the narration not so much.

An interesting take on a real house and family. The real house is Cragside and the family is called Armstrong.
The Armstrong's came to much of their wealth through the armaments industry. The family used this wealth to build a house, Cragside. Crag is similar to peek, is it not? They are both found outside of newcastle, though CJ Charls incorrectly calls the hills the pennines, they are the Cheviot's.
The house was unusual for its time for having lots of electricity with special bulbs. This was run one of the first hydroelectric damns in the world. The eastate is modeled with redwoods, planted when they mover here.
You can see the similarities between the family and house. If the family was to discover this I suspect strongly they would object against such a clear copying and twisting of their story. This is both stupid and dangerous as with a good barrister there is a possibility of liable.

Maurice pronounced Maureese instead of the more normal Morris. Mullioned pronounced moollioned. These irritated, but particularly Maureese as the name is frequently mentioned throughout the book. Otherwise excellent.

strange pronunciation?
